Even Mr. Ilanna seems disposed
to give to President Roosevelt a
dhnnae.
A few days ago, in commenting
on the annual report by State School
Commissioner Glenn, we urged that
each county he required to raise by
local taxation for school purposes as
much as it received from the slate.
We knew, of course, that this would
not he popular in those counties
which now get more from the state
treasury than they pay into it, but
we did not know that they were ben-
efltiug so greatly from the pension
and school funds.
For instance, Banks county pays
to the Rtate in taxes $7,298.92 and
gets hack in pensions $8,960. and in
school money $7,598.12, In other
words, the county gets more than
twice as much from the state as it
pays toward the state’s revenue.
Carroll county pays in taxes $20,-
301.18 and gels in pensions $14’110
and lor school purposes $18,963.08.
Gwinnett gives tip to the state $22,-
(.72 in taxes, and gets in pensions
$12,625 and for schools $16,855.08.
Wc could mention many other
onnties which get more than they
five, lmt the foregoing are sufficient
to show the wrong that is beiim per
petrated on those counties which not
only support their own hoIiooIs and
pay their own pensions, lmt contri
bute thousands upon thousands of
lollars to make up the deficiences of
other counties.

There must he something radically

burden would not be so heavy upon * '
some counties, and so light upon
others as to lie practically no burden
at all.
Would it not he well for those
who are now discussing the methods
for raising additional revenue tor
the state without increasing the tax
rate to devise some plan for reliev
ing those counties which are now
furnishing pension and school money
for a large number of other counties
of the unjust burden which they are
