One of the nm-i hopeful signs of the south’s progress is tne increased at tention to roads mid their steadily improving condition. The general condition of roads in the south is so much better now than it was ten years ago that the transportation of crops in this section to market or to railway lines costs now many mil lions of dollars less than it did be fore theso improvements were made. Every good road is an object les son that causes the building of others and where real road improvement once begins it is almost sure to con tinue. Tennessee has done much in road building during the past three years and is entering upon a well or ganized campaign of general road improvement. The Good lioads Association in that Btato has a large membership of representative and practical men in every part of the state, representing all lilies of business. The first convention of this asso ciation will be held at Nashville, be gum ing October 8th. Nearly every county in the state will be represented and the cause of good roads will probablv be substan stasitielly promoted. There will bead dresses on the cost and merits of va nous methods of roid construction The discussion and interchange of views that will be had at the con vention will surely result in much good.
