Kubelik and Paderewikl,
“Oh. Mr. Kubelik.” said a dazzling
beauty to the great violinist after one
of his performances, "'you are Indeed n
genius! Whenever I hear you and, M.
Paderewski play I seem quite dazed,
the effect upon me Is so fascinating!
Have you ever heard Paderewski, mon
sieur?”
“Once, mndnme; only once,” quietly
replied Kubelik. “But,” and this very
firmly, “1 shall certainly never hear
him again."
“Why not?” asked the astonished
beauty.
“I will tell you," answered Kubelik.
“I am conscious that I possess a cer
tain power, a certain originality. Now.
I cannot afford to lose this conscious
ness, for upon It entirely depends my
success. I henrd Paderewski once, and
then I felt my "proud consciousness'
going, my faith In myself slipping.
Paderewski’s Influence over me the
only time 1 ever heard him play was
so powerful that 1 felt, for the sake of

A Joke Hint Palled.
Professor Itogers and Dr Dale were
once lecturing In England, and at ev
ery town which they visited Dr. Dale
noticed that tils colleague, who always
spoke first, made the sume speech. In
fact, so often did the professor give
that speech that the worthy doctor
knew It off by heart, and this fact led
the latter to think or a way of taking
the wind out of bis friend's sails.
On their arrival at o town la somb
Lancashire Dr. t)afc> asked Dr. Itogers
to allow him to speak first, an arrange
ment to which the latter readily
agreed, so Dr. Dale rose and proceeded
to deliver the speech of Dr. Rogers,
looking every now and theD out of the
corner of his eye to see how thin wor
thy gentleman was taking this practl
cal Joke. Dr. Itogers sal calm and com
posed. and when at length bis rum
catne to speak be just os calmly rose
and delivered, to Dr. Dale’s utter as
toDtsbiucut. quite a opw speech.
At the conclusion of the meeting Dr.
Dale said to bis colleague:
“1 thought 1 had taken the wlud out
of your sails tonight."
Dr. Rogers replied; "Ob, no. 1 de
livered that speech when I was here a
moDth ago.”
