after awhile that Georgia does not
need to disfranchise tbe negro.

2f)00 bales of cotton and $25,000
wortli of grain and bagging- The

be worth $115,000 partially covered

German budget allowed a deficit of
$35,000,000, while the British bud

Considerable interest is being
manifested in the result of the hear
ing of the court house removal ques
tion which is now pending in the
Supreme Court of the state. Al
though the question was argued be
fore the court more than five weeks
ago, n decision has not yet been an
nounced. Tins is taken ns au indi
cation that tbe question is puzzling
tbe minds of tbe court, A request
was tnado that the decision be ren
dered as soon as possible in order
that work might be started either in
the one direction or the other.
An Exchange Bays.—The young
man who would attain success in this
oenlury must bo prepared for it by
special training and such practical
education as lias never before been
demanded in the history of the world,
says Success. The tendency in every
lino of endeavor is towards neutral
isation, toward great combinations
of interest, and the men who would
ulinih up to the head of affairs, or to
responsible positions, must be specia
lists. There will be little hope in
this century for the jaok-ot all-trades.
A man must know how to do some
one thing effectually or he will ' not
rise. On the other hand, the prizes
were never before so great, nor the.
opportunities so proniiing, for the
men wiio have been trained to do
one thing well. Those who know a
little of everything, hut have not been
trained to do one tiling effectively,
will not Vie relegatud to mediocre po
sitions.
i lull lias a number of strong
supports a in both the house and the
senate, among tlieiu is Seab Wright
the author of the bill. From the
present outlook it is very propable
that, the measure as it stands amend
ed by llo' senate will pass both
brunches ot the legislature and will
receive the Governor’s signature.
The supporters of the measure con
tend that it is the only solution of
the liquor question. Those who op
pose the passage of the bill as
«,:rt that it will be no improvement
upon the present local option laws,
but ou the contrary will be an in
crease of drunkenness, vice and
crime.
Although there are some of the
staunch prohibitionists who claim
that the measure is a compromise,
the hill has received the voles of
great manv of those who have here,
tofore been aligucd on the side of
prohibition.
There were several important
amendments to the bill made by the
senate, one of which provides that an
election might be called on a peti
lion of one-third of the qualified
ters of a county instead of one-
fifth, as in the house bill and one
tenth as in the presei t local option
measure-
Another important amendment
provides tiiat tiie measure shall not
effect any dispensary already estab
lished by act of the legislature, and
that in towns ot 5,000 inhabitants or
more the dispensary commissioners
may establish as many dispensaries as
they deem necessary for the conve
nience of (he public.
Much has been said on the subject
from the pulpit—some denouncing
tbe move, others saying let it pass
and accept it as the best thing for
temperance under tile circumstances

CROPS IN GOOD CONDITION
Savnimah, Nov. 22— Although the
farms adjoining Savannah have keen
visited several times by frost, and
though tee mercury fell below the
freezing point on the 17th, the far
mere report that none of their crops
have been damaged.
The only crops affected are the tops
of the sweet pototoes aud the Irish
potanes-though the tubers them
selves were not affeeted-and the snap
beans, ol which nearly all had been
picked before tbe cold weather came
On the whole, said Mr. M. L. Exley,
the fall, with the exception of the
drought, has been an excellent one
for the truck growers. Continuing
he said that the only crops that can
be hurt now arc the cabbages, beets
and turnips but that all of these are
tuirly hardy and will not be hurt to
any extent unless the thermometer
should go below 20 degrees.
The weather so far this month has
been about normal, the average mean
temperature being slightly in excess
of 59 degress- The highest point re
corded during the mouth was 81 de«
grees, on the 1st, aud the lowest, 31
on the 17th. The rainfall, to date,
.98 of an inch, a deficiency ot slight
ly over 1 inch. The maximum tern
parature yesterday was 5tl degrees
and the minimum 36, making a mean
of 46 degrees, 8 below the normal.
