On Saturday evening last Sheriff S. F. Edwards, of Quincy, Fla., who was conducting a negro prisoner from Faoeville in this county to Oof- fee county, became involved in a difficulty with a negro on the train and as a result both men were killed. The last procurable information seems to be as follows: The sheriff boarded the train at Faeoville with his prisoner and entered the negro coach. At Fowltown several negroes hoarded the train eu route to Climax, among them one Jim Armstrong a rather b.urley fellow. The conductor came through taking up tickets and after some words with limy negro secured his. The negro was di ink ing and demanded that Mr. Edwatds be removed from the negro coach. Hu then began insisting m a very insulting way that Mr. Edwards leave the our. Mr. Edwards replied that he was in charge of a negro prisoner in the car and that he would not do so. Borne words followed and the negro whipped out a pistol. Sever al shots were fired and the men clinch ed. In the struggle that followed the shooting was continued and the two men finally fell from the moving tram to the ground, where they were bom afterward found dead or in a dying condition. The train men tearing further trouble ran on to Climax a few miles, put off their negro passengers and went back, taking both men on board. The negro who was in charge of the sheriff was taken to this place and lodged in jail, while the remains of dead Sheriff Edwards were shipped to Chattahoochee for interment. Several stories of the shooting are alloat but tae above appears to be the most reasonable one and nearest ? si-. -4- • ..at?. j4- -Je_.
