that Candidate Terrell is hustling

Since Prince Henry’s departure
the country has settled down to th<

Pear is expressed in several sec

heavy rains washed the pollen from
the peach blossoms and therefore the
fruit crop will be seriously injuied.

Reports from Washington give
rise to the fear that Pension Com
missioner 11. Clay Evans is to be
removed from Ins present position
to another to which he will be pro>
moted. The people are abundantly
grateful for the manly stand Mr.
Evans has taken from time to time
against those who are constantly try
ing to break down Ins sway in the
pension department. The country
is at present near enough submerged
with pension swindles, and if Mr.
Evans is retired, there is no telling
where the matter may end. If Mr.
Evans regards the wishes of the peo
ple of the South he will not accept
another position than the one lie
now holds.

Considerable trouble is brewing
in the University of Nebraska over
the selection of Booker T. Washing
ton for commencement day orator.
A number of tbe members of the
senior class have intimated in very
strong terms that they do not wish
the presence of Mr. Washington on
this very important occasion. Be
yond all question the only reason for
the selection of Washington .s for
notoriety, and therefore not a rea
sonable reason. There are hundreds
of men in the United States who
have more sense in a minute than
Washington has all day, and there"
fore it would appear that the faculty
should not seek to humiliate these
objecting students by their choice.
But then we are not troubling our
selves so much oyer Nebraska’s
calamities since there is slim possi>
bility of his selection by one of the
colleges of the South.
It isn’t such a difficult matter after
all to size up a man by the manner
in which the dumb brutes under his
charge are cared for. The man w iio
will cruelly maltreat a horse or a
cow is not worthy the possession of an
animal and should receive sharp puns
ishment at the hands of the law. The
womau who kicks over the cat or
scalds a dog which unhaply comes
within her reach, isn’t the kind >>! a
creature that angels are made of.
No doubt a great deal of the cruelly
to animals is due to one or two
things; either to ignorance a* to
what tbe animal can eudure. or to a
reckless and criminal disregard there
of. The grand juries of this state,
as well as of all states, should dili
gently investigate all charges of this
nature and when a man is found
guilty, such punishment should be
meted out to him as would teach him
a lesson well-

A- Pompons Reception That Amnetf
President Crev>'.
M. Severlaro de Heredia, the minis
ter of public works In the Bouvier cabi
net during the presidency of M. Grevy,
belonged to the famous naturalized Cu
ban family, of whieli another member,
the Corate de Heredia, is one of the im
mortal 40 of the French academy. Most
of the family bare dark spins, suspi
ciously mulatto, and other negro char
acteristics. This has, however, in no
wise interfered with their standing ill
Paris, where several of the family have
long been prominent The former min
ister had also been president of the
municipal council of Paris and a depu
ty from a Paris arrondissement.
His dark skin led to a curious mis
take at the Elysee the day after he had
been appointed a member of the Rou-
vler cabinet. According to immemorial
custom the new ministers called singly
on President Grevy to pay their re
spects. On the same day. as It hap
pened, an official visit was expected
from the president of tbe republic of
Haiti, who was to present his letters to
the president. When M. de Ileredia
arrived in the court of the palace, the
minor officials stationed there, who
were not familiar with the new minis
ter’s features, Judged from ills com
plexion that he was the Haitian digni
tary. The courtyard became very ani
mated with guards hurrying to and fro
to their places, while one of the officers
of the president's military household
went to inform M. Grevy of the dis
tinguished visitor’s Arrival
M. de Ileredia received all this with
dignified composure, for, nev^r kn-'ng
been a minister before this. thought
this ceremonial was probably the usual
one. Finally, with tho beating of
; drums, he was ushered Into the recep-
| lion room, where the chief executive
j stood ready to receive him. “What."
! cried he, “it’s only you, Heredia!"
I “Why, yes, M. lo President,” replied
the puzzled minister. Grevy began to
laugh. “Well,” he cried, “you have
been minister only 24 hours and have
succeeded in turning my house upside
down. What will you do later on?”--

Decatur county farmers are uow
busy about their crop planting and
it is to be hoped that in so doing
they will not overlook the import
ance of producing food crops. A
few acres of sweet potatoes or ground
peas, will uot be cultivated in vain, as
we shall see if provisions hold up to
the price for which they are now
going. Those who can do so should
experiment a little with Cassava,
broom corn and other products which
can be profitably raised in this
section.

The best of everything for less money
is our motto, with liquors as every
thing else.
For instance, a better Rve whiskey can
not be produced than our Antiquary,
yet, we sell it for $1.50 per quart
Can give you a pure com whiskey
for 60c a quart. Both mediciually
pure, Because others cannot dupli
cate our prices is not a good rea'-o-
that these goods are not of the best.
We give an absolute guarantee of
their purity and we will back up
that guarantee. The price speaks
for itself. With the medicinal liq

is worse than the disease. Not so
here. Better save yourself money
as well as headache by getting these
pure liquors when ueeded.
