HAD TO WAIT A LITTLE,
The Rtama Mule C.tli Rot Horry
Ted 00 the loataot.
Late In the sixties actors still had
their costumes carried to and from the
theater In champagne baskets by tho
“basket boy,” and the very first and
most Important duty of the actor or
actress after rehearsal was to get tho
basket ready and place it outside tho
door; then only one might feel free.
Well, Cupid had been taking a Uttlo
filer behind the scenes, and a young
comedian had been stricken with lovo
for a bit of a girl who danced between
the first play and the farce. One day
he saw the old leader of the orchestra
tap her cheek with hla bow, and tho
awful familiarity was too much to bo
endured silently. He walked homo
with her, and In the boarding houoe
hall he spoke. A minister’s name was
mentioned, a number, o street, some,
thing about a license. Nothing seemed
very clear except his love and his de
sire to get married at once, at once!
“Oh, Lizzie, will you marry me? Door
little Lizzie, will you?” he Implored.
And Lizzie, who was about the height
of a nine-year-old child, but waa full
sixteen, very pink and vory pleased,
looked coyly up, then modestly down
and answered, “I’m awfully glad yon
love me, Ted, but — but really yon
know, you’ll have to wait a little!”
Down went Ted's face. “Waltl” ho
cried In a tragic voice. “Walt! Good
kingdom! Why? Wliat for? How
tong?” And Lizzie, with wide, reproach
ful blue eyes, said, “Why, Ted, you
know well enough you’ll have to wait
till I get my basket ready!”—Clara Mor

Some Smart Answers.
Here ore some samples of what the
British schoolboy can do when he trie*
hard:
"John Wesley was a grent sea cap

and by degrees rose to be Duke of Wel
lington. lie was burled nenr Nelson
in the Poets' corner at Westminster ab

"The sublime porte Is a very fine old
wine.”
"The possessive case Is the case when
somebody has got yours and won't give
It to you.”
“The plural of penny Is twopence.”
“Ill the sentence, '1 saw the goat butt
the man.’ 'butt' Is a conjunction be
cause It sboivs tho connection between
the goat and the man.”
“Mushrooms always grow In damp
places, and so they look like umbrel

"The differenefe between water and
air Is that air can be made wetter, but
water cannot."
When Women Curved.
In George I.’s reign It was the bound-
en duty of the mistress of a country
house to carve for her guests. Eti
quette demanded It of her, and no on*
might relieve her of her arduous task,
not even the master. To the latter waa
only assigned the easy labor of paaatng
the bottle and looking on while each
Joint was placed In turn before hie wifi
or daughter, as the case might be, and
by her rapidly manipulated. Carving
became one of the branches of a good
feminine education, and there were pro-
feesional carving masters who taught
the young ladles.
Lady Mary Wortley Montagu took
lessons in the art three times a week
and on her father’s public days made a
practice of having her own dinner an
hour or two beforehand. A guest who
did not receive bis portion from hla
hostess’ own fair bands would have
considered himself much aggrieved.
A Chameleon's Tosses.
The tongue of the chameleon la won
derfully extensile and extensible, says
a naturalist. By the former word I
mean the distance It can be tbrfiwn
out of the mouth. By the latter word
Its own elongation Is Inferred, for I
am sure there Is not space sufficient In
the lower part of the mouth to accom
modate the eight Inch tongue which
can be thrown out unless It Is greatly
contracted again. We know that It lies
“folded” In the mouth, but It folds Into
a very small space, and when I have
held a chameleon's mouth wide open
to try to get a sight of this remark
able member It lies so compactly In
the loose lower Up that to see It la next
to impossible.
TIip atlsslent Man.
“I think the nernt penurious man I

mackintosh. "w.is <>,J ilewllgus. He
suioked his cigars to the last half Inch,
chewed the stumps and used the ashes
for snuff, but be wasu’t satisfied even
then and gave up the habit.”
“Wbat for?” asked the man with the
big Adam’s apple.
“Be couldn't think of any way to
utilize the smoke.”—Chicago Tribune.
No Sale Was Made.
A dealer In p^t birds was visited by a
customer who stuttered and wanted to
buy a parrot which took bis fancy.
The salesman waa an Irishman who
had jnst been employed by the dealer.
The customer said, “Du—dn—does that
parrot ta—ta—talk good?”
“Well," replied the Irish salesman,
“If be did not talk better than you I
would wring his neck off!”
