Young Corbett defeated Terry
McGovern in the eleventh round
of what was to have been a twenty
round bout in San Francisco on
Tuesday night. The betting was
in favor of McGovern at io to 8.
This week the story from the
flooded districts of the Mississippi
tell the sad tale of much loss of
life and property. The levees
gave way on both sides of the riv-
er and vast areas were entirely
covered. This has been the worst
of all the overflows on record.
President Forbes of Stetsen
University Florida and the million
aire whose name the school bears,
arc hard at work in the courts. It
seems that Mr, Stetsen desired
the removal of Dr. Forbes and
the doctor fears that it will be a
confession of guilt to resign. Jeal
ousy on the part of Stetsen is the
alleged reason for his position in
the affair. May the just cause
win in the federal courts.
Almost every town of the south
the size of Bainbridge ought to be
able to support a Y. M. C. A. and
it would aid materially in building
up the morals of the community.
On April the 5th Waycross will
celebrate the second anniversary
of their Y. M. C. A. The asso-
ciation has been instrumental in
doing good in every civilized coun
try on earth. We ought to enter
the realm of the civ lized, so to
speak.
Rev. Dr. Charles W. Bird was
elected President of Wesley m

one of the best known men in the
Methodist church. He is at pres
ent pastor of til-’ First Methodist
Church of Atlanta, lie has not
accepted the chair yet Ini' will
give his answer to the trustees in
tea days. It is highly prohalde
that he will take the place howev
er. The election was practically
by ’inanimous vote on the first
ballot.
In closing the inquest in the
Burdick murder case in Buffalo
Judge Murphy cleared the name
of Burdick from all scandal. He
said that from all the evidence
that had come out in the inquest
Mr. Burdick had lived an exem
plary life, was a kind fataer and a
forgiving husband. He further
said that were Pennell living suffi
cient evidence had come out to
warrant his arrest. But with the
dead as with the living the law
presumes Pennell innocent untill
he is proven otherwise. The
Pennell inquest begins next week

Mary Applewhite Bacon is a
Georgia woman who is writing
some very realistic articles for va.
rious magazines. In the April
McClure’s may be found a very
pathetic story which strikes deep
into the sociological conditions of
Georgia life. “Who was her keep
er" relates the story of a seven
year old Georgia girl who moved
to a Factory town and worked
through the weary hours from
morning till night, repressing what
might have been a bouyant nature
and a glorious woman. The arti
cle is well worth reading as Miss
Bacon is well acquainted with her
theme.

CONSUMPTION.
That great, all devastating dis
ease, consumption, that has piloted
its numerous hosts of human be
ings across the waters of death
is at length giving way before the
march of intrepid and never tir
ing science. Each year we hear
of donations made by the weal
thy for the establishment of sani
tariums where the disease may be
studied and experiments tried.
Since the discovery of the tuber
cttlosis germs rapid strides have
been made and ere another de
cade passes, physicians will be
able, in all probability to say to
those wh8 dread the ravishes of
the de'troyer more ruthless than
war, that there's a panacea. Our
longing is that^tlns day may soon
come to gladden th .-. lives of the
millions who fear.
There is no promiscuous use of
the pardoning power in the En
glish government. This is evi
denced by the fact that despite the
repeated requests of the United
States and many high officials of
both countries Mrs. Mrybrick who
was convicted of poisoning her
husband, has had to remain in an
English piison for fifteen vears.
She is now to be pardoned, not
on account of any requests that
have been made or on account of
any external pressure v. hich has
been brought to bear however, but
because it is the custom in En
gland to pardon a person after the
fifteenth year if there has ever
been any doubt about the guilt of
the convicted party. There is no
such thing with the government of
England as pardoning a life pris
oner after only one or two years
service in prison for some heinous
crime. Thus are the English laws
come to be the most feared and
respected of til codes of every
clime.
