Mr. Bryan’s editorial on “Har
mony vs Harmony” in last week’s
Commoner is one of the ablest ar
ticles from the pen of the Nebras
kan. Every Democrat should read
it if possible.
The law separating the whiles
and negroes on street cars in New
Orleans is working beautifully de-
spite the adverse reports which
came from that place several
months ago.
Frank A. Vanderliss in Scrib
ner’s makes the assertion that
there are twelve customs districts
maintained by the United States
at a cost of $1$,578.14 and the
collections from which aggregated
for the year $275. One collection

IMr. Guerry’s Georgian is such
-an •outspoken advocate of reform
in our state government, that we
feel constrained to draw forth an
•expression on the important ques
tion of biennial sessions of the lcg-
jslature. In our judgment this is
one of the many muci needed re
forms for which the people of the
-state are clamoring.
James H. Tillman, the slayer of
editor Gonzales of the Columbia
State, has been indicted by the
grand jury of his county for mur
der, and he will be placed on trial
next Fall. The trial will con
sume a number of days, as many
of the best attorneys of the state
have been employed in the de
fense of Tillman. Great interest
will be manifested in the outcome
as the whole country has taken
sides as it were, one way or the
other.
In an interview given out by
Senator A. O. Bacon, of Georgia,
in Washington a few days ago he
said that he was in favor of re
moving only the top birck
of the tariff wall which is
shutting out foreign competition.
We heartily agree in this kind of
conservative policy. Sweeping
changes from even a bad condi
tion arc apt to throw the business
world into convulsion and in the
tariff as well as everything else we
should approach our Ultimate end
of a very low tariff, gradually.
Mr. Bacon dwells upon the sub
ject of harmony, which to our
minds is the all important ques-
tio n for the democrats at present.

NEW 1NTER.0CEANIC ROUTE.
A fact whieh has hitherto been
ignored, is now the subject of a
great deal of serious discussion.
It is the advisability of inaugura
ting a line of Trans Atlantic
Steamers between St. Johns, New
Foundland and Galway, Ireland.
In this age of hurry and contin
ual s rain for time saving, the mat
ter is one of no small note. The
distance between these two points
is a little over 1,800 miles while
the distance between New York
and Liverpool is over 3,000 miles.
It is estimated the tourist can go
to New Foundland, take a liner,
travel be rail from Galway to Lon
don and reach his destination at
least 24 hours earlier than by the
present route. Twenty four hours
in the commercial world means
many thousands of dollars, to the
great financiers, and it is not
at all improbable that in the near
future this shorter route will be
engaged by the business men.
The English papers are presents
ing the matter of their countrymen
in ver^ glowing terms because they
desire to have Subject capital con
trol the line. The americans are
always wide awake however and it
does not take newspaper admoni
tion to make our northern brethren
invest in anything that is likely to
pay a fair dividend. Galway is said
to be one of the best natural har
bors in the world.
