The we ither man has evidently
made a misdeal somewhere.
There appears to be a few “uv
’em" who don’t want Mr. Cleve
land for president.
The Savannah Press, Pleasant
Stovall’s paper, is one ot the
brightest dailies of the state.
The blackbery crop is nigh at
hand, and the Georgia editor shall
yet be rewarded if he toil and faint
not.
OUR DUMB ANIMALS.
We are yet opposed to the Pen-
nypacker press muzzling law ot
Pennsylvania. It is a dangerous
departure.
Editor McIntosh of the Albany
Herald, characterizes the talented
Miss Cain of the Quitman Free
Press as "his bachelor girl.”
Joe Hill Hall and the Georgia
Legislature will both soon be in
session in Atlanta. Indeed the
one would be incomplete without
the other.
. Withitwo strikes .against him,
the Savannah Press thinks that
Mr. Bryan has just cause to be
worried about who follows him on
the batting list.
The prevalence of smallpox in
the dormitory has caused the sus
pension of the Normal and Indus
trial-School at Milledgeville tor the
remainder of the term.
A successful potato planter has
been invented; an excellent potato
grabbler has been in existence
since the small boy on the farm
first put in his appearance,
The chief difference between
Booker T. and the rest of the ne
groes, according to an exchange,
is that Booker touches the white
folks for bigger things than old
clothes, etc.
Several Georgia exchanges have
entered a plea for a full session of
th<* legislature this summer. Evi
dently the aforesaid “esteemed’’
arc laboring under the delusion
that the summer session represen
tative has "sworn off,” or that the
Atlanta barrooms have closed
for the season, neither of which
conclusions is justified by the facts
in the ease.
A meeting of the baseball en
thusiasts of several Georgia and
Florida towns is being held at
Valdosta today for the purpose of
organizing a league for the coming
season. So far as we know Bain
bridge is not represented at the
meeting, although she should try
if possible to get in the league.
Our people are expecting some
good ball games this season.
Throughout the South there
needs to come an awakening of
the. people’s consciences against
the practice of cruelty to amimals
and beasts of burden. We have
touched on this question before,
and it is our intention to press it
from time to time in order that
our grand juries and courts may
be reminded ot the importance of
enforcing the statutes against mis
using dumb brutes.
True it is that the present laws
are ineffective in Georgia, al
though to the just man it must
appear that the regulations should
be more strictly enforced against
unjustly punishing animals which
by nature have been robbed of the
power of resistance. Cowardice
should be frowned upon at all
times, and the man who maltreats a
beast because he fears no resist
ance from the beast is a coward
and a ruffian. Many a man who
goads his ox unmercifully, would
not dare to lift his hand against
his fellowman whose chances of
resistance are equal to his own
As to the remedy for the evil of
which we now complain there is
none more effective than the or
ganization of societies for the pre
vention of cruelty to animals, and
there is not a community in the
the whole country where such a
society is not needed. Such an
organization if backed by the law
and the officers thereof would
throw a damper at least on the
wicked and flagrant habit men
have of punishing unnecessarily
those creations of nature which
have not the intelligence nor the
power to complain ot the abuses
to which they are subjected.
Why would it not be wise for
the legislature to turn its atten
tion in this direction? Why should
not the judges of the superior
courts of the state be required to
charge the assembling grand juries
with the duty of thoroughly inves
tigating all charges of cruelty to
animals ? Such a law would cer
tainly receive the endorsement of
every considerate mind, for “The
righteous man regardeth the life
of his beast.”
T. P. A. TO ORGANIZE,
Pennsylvania's Pennypacker’s
press muzzling statute has become
a law by the grace (or disgrace) of
the cheif executive of the state.
The operations of the law may
tend to smoothe over republican
misrule in Pennsylvania, but it is
a severe stroke at the morals and
political decency of the state. It
ought never to have become a law
and we predict that the voters will
rue the day of its passage.
We learn that an effort is being
made to establish at Bainbridge a
post of the Travelers’ Protective
Association of America, and as
soon as the requisite number of
names can be secured, the organi
zation will be completed by the
election of officers. A post of the
association has recently been
formed at Waycross and Valdosta
and there is no reason why Bain
bridge should not have one also.
The T. P. A. comprises some
thirty state divisions among
which number Georgia stands
sixth in point. of membership.
There is something like 50,000
members in the national associa
tion. In addition to the other
benefits to oe derived from nflem
bership in the T. P. A. there is an
accident insurance feature at no
additional cost of membership.
Should this Post be organized
in Bainbridge we would be entitled
to a vice-president place in and
among the state officers, and when
fifteen or more names have been
secured, the president of the state
division of Georgia will come to
Bainbridge and organize and insti
tute the local Post.
We trust that those who are
pushing this movement for the
setting up of a Post of this associ
ation at Bainbridge will be suc
cessful. We are sure that a suffi
cient number of traveling men
make theif homes in Bainbridge
to constitute the Post.
