Motion has been made fo<t a new
trial in the case of the negro, Bill
Grant, who was last week oonvioted
and sentenced to hang for the mur
der of James Bird last Christmas.
The other negro, Joan Hines, who
was convicted at the same time with
Grant, bat for whom the jury re
turned a recommendation for meroy,
will serye a life term in the peniten
tiary as no steps have been taken to
carry up his oase. Col. Wallace
Sheffield is coubsel for Grant, and
be will make every effort to save the
neck of his client.
R. Stone, of Thomasville, is
in the city completing the long dis
tasce telephone line from Thomas-
yille. He informs ns that the line
will be in operation within the next
few days. SstiBfaotory arrange
ments have been made with the lo
cal telephone exchange so that the
line will run into the oentral office.
Tbe completion of the line will give
Bainbridge long distance telephone
communication with all important
points, inoluding New York City.
The last isene of the Dawson News
contains an aooount of, the death of
Prof. T. C. Hoyl, of that oity, last
Wednosday morning after an illness
of several months. Mr Hoyl was an
honor graduate of Emory College,
and shortly after graduation began
teaching at Donalsonville in this
county where he made many friends,
and these will be pained by the in
telligence of bis death. He leaves
a, wife and a small child.
Hundreds of hay harvesting ma
chines are being sold to farmers of
the county, and it is probable that
Albany will have to invite us np to
her Hay Day and Carnival this fall.
Deoatnr county farmers are learning
that there is more profit in their
grass prop than there is to be de
rived by stripping the blades from
the corn.

In the office of Ordinary, this city,
on Monday last, V L Kelly was mar
ried to Miss Minnie Lee Brownlow.
The marriage was a gretna green af
fair, tbe bride having been attending
school at Brinson, in this county,
while her father livea m Alabama.
The yonag groom is said to be an
industrious fellow and will no doubt
make a worthy husbknd. The happy
oonple left on the following train for
their home in Alabama.
The Stuart House in Valdosta,
well known to the traveling public
was burned to ashes this week. For
many years this Vas the only hotel
in that oity and because of its oon-
venienoy to the depot did a good
business, but since the ereotion of
the handsome new Valdes last year
the Stnart has been vanning at small
profit if not at dead expense. The
property was partially insured.
B, McCarty, formerly of Dothan,
Ala., and who was here at the open
ing of the Blaum Jewelry Co., has
returned here and.will make this his
future home. As soon as he can se
cure a suitable residence be will re
move his family to this oity. He is
an expert watch and jewelry repairer
and will be connected with the
Blaum Jewelry Co.

General Assembly of the State of Geor
gia. for the passage of an Act entitled
“An Act to amend an Act of the Gen
eral Assembly of tbe State of Georgia
to establish tbe City Court of Bainbridgo
in the Citv of Bainbridge in ana for the
County of Decatur, to define its juris
diction and powers, to provide for the
appointment of a Judge and other offi
cers thereof, to define the power of
Judge and otner officers tuereof. and for
other purposes. Said Act being ap
proved November 27, 1200. and being
published in the Georgia Law# of 1900.
pages 104-112. Said Act also amended
by an Act ot the General Assembly of
the State of Georgia, approved Novem
ber 21,1901, and published in the Geor
gia Laws of 1901, page 94
’the Act to be applied for at the next
session of the General Assembly of tbe
State of Georgia is to amend the above
recited Acts by repealing those portn-ns
thereof providing for the appointment
of tbe Judge and Solicitor of said Court,
aod adding in lieu of tbe portions re
pealed. a provision that the Judge and
Solicitor of said Court shall be elected
by the qualified voters of Decatur
Bainbridge, Ga., 27th May. 19W.
