Memorial Exercises Next
Wednesday.
Miss Frances Ben Jackson en
tertained a number of friends of
her pupils with a final musical at
the College Saturday afternoon.
The parents and friends were
highly pleased with the evident
improvement and work of the class
under Miss Jackson. Each per
former showed, not only the good
work of the pupils, but competency
of the instructor to correctly place
and cultivate the individual talent.
Miss Jackson argues there is mind
as well as soul in music, in this
she is a Listsite, for he held that
the technique, the mechanical part
of music, was simply the cause to
convey the final grand effect of
the mind work.
However the soul and mind are
such Siamese twins that it would
take Lord Lytton to sever the
Gordian knot. Miss Jackson has
trained a class ol thirty in vocal
and instrumental music, also elo
cution. Sue gave a delightful sur
prise to many in rendering the
sweet, rich notes of Bucks' “Sun
set,” so suited to her voice. While
in Chicago each summer she has
had special masters to train her
voice.
We think the trustees and the
whole town should be gratified
with the excellent management of
each department of the College
this year, for not a finer corps of
teachers to be found in the county.
The instructors have been as stu
dious as the pupils, and where you
find this progressiveness the re
sults are always satisfactory.
The following is the program
that was rendered:.

Godard, Second Gavotte,

federate veterans of the county be
on hand, as comfortable seats will

That Early Closing.
What are our merchants going
to do in regard to early closing
during the sultry months of sum
mer which are now almost upon
us? This, the all-absorbing ques
tkrn which concerns not alone the
physical comfort of the clerks and
the merchants themselves, but
likewise the duties they may owe
to their families. The business
man or clerk who begins work at
six in the morning, and who works
till six in the evening has certainly
put in a full day’s work and is dn
titled to the remaining hour for
recreation and sleep.
We hope that our merchants
will take a more liberal vjew of the
matter than they have hitherto,
and get together on an early dos
ing hour for the summer.
Capt. E. L. Magruder, the pop
ular commander of the steamer
Queen City, was married to Miss
Stella Clark, of Columbia, Ala.
at Dothan. Ala., on the 10th inst.
and they arrived in Apalachicola
on last Wednesday morning.
From Dothan. Capt. and Mrs
Magruder went to Columbia, the
home of the bride, where they
spent several happy days.
And on Tuesday last they
arrived in Bainbridge, Georgia,
where they were met at the train
bv some fifteen couples of Bam
bridge young folks who accompa
nied them to the steamer Queen
City, then lying at the Bainbridge
wharf, where a sumptous repast
had been prepared for the occa
sion. The steamer was hand
somely decorated in honor of the
bride and groom. In addition
delicious refreshments served
dancing was indulged, in by the
many friends assembled.
Capt. Magruder is one of the
most popular officers of the river
fleet, and he enjoys a large ac
quaintance and many friends The
bride is much admired by a larg
circle of friends at Columbia, Ala
her home.—Apalachicola Times.
Capt. and Mrs. Magruder upon
their arrival in this city were ten
dered a reception at the boat, in
which many of our young people
joined. It is a pleasure to know
that Bainbri Ige is to be the home
of this gallant and accomodating
captain of the Queen City, and
his accomplished and agreeable
bride. Bainbridge extends a hearty
welcome.
