There will be no use for any one
to go hungry or bareheaded in Whig
ham as there are five restaurants and
will soon be five millinery dealers.
Team of Crack Shots.
On the evening of the 9th of Sep
tember at tne Methodist chureb in
Whigham, the marriage of Miss Bes
sie Batler and Dr. M. M. McCord
will be solemnized.
Whigham High Sohool opened
Monday with flattering prospects of
a better and larger sohool than
Whigham has ever known. The en
rollment for this week will be near
150 pupils.
Miss Ethel Perry, of Camilla, took
obarge of tbe music department of
the high school Monday.
Murry Maxwell and Will Craw
ford, of Cairo, Misses Ada Trulook
and Lonie Bell, of this city, spent a
pleasant day at the Lime Sink pic
nicking this week.
There was a very fine illustrated
leoture given at the Baptist ohuroh
last Friday evening by Rev. Mr.
Dillworth, of Tifton. All who at
tended expressed themselves as be
ing highly pleased.

Commissioner Bradwell informs us
that the public aohools are opening
upon with bright prospects for the
coming year. The Search Light
hopes that both the teaohers and tbe
pnpils are entering into the work
with greater zeal than they have
ever done before, and that-the work
accomplished will prove more than
satisfactory to the patrons of the
schools.
There will be a great Masonic rally
in Lower Spring Creek distriot to*
morrow, and we understand that
several of the local craftsmen from
this city will attend. Col. A. H.
Russell has been invited to deliver
tbe address of the occasion, and he
has accepted the invitation offered.
The Masons of that seotion are en-
thosiastio and the affair will be a
great success.
Mrs. L. F. Patterson and her
charming daughter. Miss Runa, left
Wednesday for Buffalo Lithia, Va.,
where they expect to spend several
weeks enjoying the pleasures and
beuefits of that most exoellent and
fashionable of southern summer re
sorts. Before their return they will
visit other interesting Virginia
points and Washington City, and
will reach Bainbridge again about
the 15th of October.

Five representatives of the
Bainbridge Independents, com
pany I, of the 4th regiment, left
Monday for Savannah, where they
are this week encamped taking
part in the state rifle practice held
there.
The detachment was composed
of 1st Sargeant J. M. Mitchell,
Sargeant D. L. O’Neal, and pri
vates Stansel and Roberts, and
were in charge of Lieutenant
Wright Jackson.
The positions on the team were
awarded these men alter competi
tive shooting by the members of
the company which was indulged
last week. They made the high
est scores as marksmen and se
cured the coveted positions. Lieu
tenant Jackson was appointed
range ufficer and will act in that
capacity during the encampment.
The boys are expected to return
tomorrpw.

Mrs. W. R. Owens, of our, town,
is the champion watermelou raises.

and the first ripe one pulled the
scales at 49 pounds. Whigham and
her energetic ladies can’t be excelled.
Rev. Josh Martin and family will
move to tbelr home in Pelham next
week. Uncle Josh is one of Whig-
ham’s first inhabitants, and by hia
going, Ukea one of the oldest and
most highly esteemed citizens, or
laud marks from its midst.
Mrs. B. D. Fudge, the popular
hostess of the Bon Air, is in Atlanta
at the Halcyon Retreat Sanitarium.
Mrs. Fudge under weut an opera
tion tor appendicitis a tew days ago,
performed by Dr. McRea, of Atlan
ta, Telegrams have been received

will be delighted to know tbat she is
out of danger and is now on the road
to a rapid recovery.

Increase the Gai
Judge Spence was in the city
Wednesday and heard evidence in
the case of T. W. Salter, charged
with the murder of Arthur Har
rell. The hearing was on the ap
plication of the defendant to be
allowed to give bond and be dis
charged from the custody of the
sheriff for his appearance to stand
trial at the November term of the
court. After hearing the evidence
the judge refused to allow the de
fendant to give bond and he will
have to stay in jail to await trial.
At the first or preliminary hear
ing, before Judge Bower Salter
was allowed bond of #3,000 which
he gave. He was afterwards re
arrested on a warrant sworn out
before Judge Spence, whose ruling
annuls this bond and remands him
him to jail without the privi
lege of giving bond.

To Wed Next Sun
From Pensacola.
The steamer J. P. • Williams,
Capt. Buchanan, arrived last Fri
day from Pensacola with a large
freight tonnage, consigned to our
merchants. The people said it
looked like old times to see the
drays hauling off the cargo from
the well known wharf at the junc
tion. The Williams is a beautiful
little steamer, carrying about a
hundred tons burden. She will
ply the^iver regularly between
Pensacola and Geneya, carrying
both freight and passenger*.—Ge-
