The Panama hat will soon go
the way of the Panama canal.
The pesky mosquito is still
abroad in tbe land, though not in
great numbers.
An exchange observes that the
recent legislature preferred to
‘•turn on” the gas.
Georgia’s melon and peach
crops though not large this year,
have been paying ones.
It is interesting to note that as
fast as the counties of the state
vote prohibition in, they very
promptly set up water works; and
what would be more natural.
Joe Hill Hall’s forcible annexa-
tion to the city of Macon has been
favorably received throughout the
state, under the idea that Mr. Hall
will still be a citizen of Georgia.
The Washington Post suggests
that while education will benefit
the negro, yet he is advised to
keep up his sprinting practice if
he expects to travel to Indiana or
Illinois.
There is always trouble ahead
for the young man who earns a sal
ary of $30 per month, and who
spends #29.50 of this amount in
fine dress, and the hire of car
riages.
The Vienna News declares that
"there is no class ot men more re*
sponsible for the average lynching
than those lawyers who lor money
are willing to resort to any kind
of sharp practice to defeat the
ends of justice.
There is one convincing fact in
reference to those international
yacht races, and that is that the
fellow who indulges his desire to
bear off the cup, has an unbound
ed opportunity to "blow” himself.
Good roads will do as much for
Georgia as any other one thing,
but they should not be budded at
the expense of the poor children
of the state who are striving to
receive a common school educa
tion.
The esteemed Savannah Press
has published an article ot great
length on “embarrassing prosper
ity ,*’ at the same time the weekly
papers of the state were sending
up cries about “embarrassing pov
erty.”
The summer girl will soon brush
the salt sea from her breast and
return to the interior of the ken-
try, where things are more real to
say the least of it. We’ll wager
that there will be open arms to re
ceive her.
GEORGIA AT ST. LOUIS.
Governor Terrell* has affixed his
signature to the bill appropriating
$30,000 for an exhibit of the
state’s agricultural and kindred re
sources at the St. Louis exposi
tion, and it is to be hoped that all
parties will pull faithfully to the
end of placing the state in as cred
itable light at the great fair, as it
is possible to do on the amount
appropriated. Every loyal citizen
of Georgia, though he had fought
ever so vigorously the appropria
tion, should come to the state’s
assistance, and as such we propose
to do so.
The Search Light has opposed
consistently the movement for the
purpose set forth, but since the
appropriation has been made, we
hope to add our mite in the direc
tion of securing to the state the
value of her money, so nearly as
possible.
Wt hope to see the resources of
Decatur county exhibited, and we
do not believe that the department
of agriculture will underestimate
the value of our farm products in
the exhibit. With tobacco that
captures the prizes over all others
whenever placed under competi
tive inspection, and with the larg
est sugar plantations outside of
Louisiana, with the best table syr
ups in the world, Decatur county
would be able to attract the atten
tion of a few visitors at least to
the great show.
We hope that Mr. Stevens will
take this as an invitation for him
to summon the agricultural re
sources of this the best county in
Georgia, in his labors to place our
best foot forward at the St. Louis
exposition.
Uncle Sam’s receipts from all
sources the past year were $558,-
887,525.87, while the disburse
ments amounted to $506,176,590.
31, leaving a surplus of $52,710,-
935.56. The government it has
been estimated has been taking in
about two millions of dollars per
day.

The dove hunting season opened
August 15th and the fellow with
his two-barrel shot gun and
pointer dog may be seen en route
to the fields and woods. The sea
son really opened too early as the
young doves are not yet grown.

were attended by a bridesmaid of

This must have caused even Cupid
to feel that be was growing old.
The Macon Telegraph recently
published a timely article on the
subject of “Filtered Immigration,”
which should address itse If strong
ly to those Americans who are
really interested in th« great fu
ture welfare of their country. The
Telegraph points out the advant
age to be derived from the best
class of immigration to this coun-,
try, but it adheres to the proposi
tion that Uncle Sam should lay
strict regulations and enforce them
as to the influx of foreigners. The
truth of the matter is that every
country ha; its dissatisfied ele
ment, its idlers and its anarchists.
These classe. should be as care
fully as possible guarded against
if we would maintain the safety of
the republic. So far as the south
is concerned these classes are not
yet to be brought into account, as
the great bulk of immigrants flock
to the northern cities where organ
ization of labor is more general
and where votes are sold for a
greater price at election time.
A skilled and experienced horti
culturist of Americus, is said to
have discovered a process whereby
one may have strawberries until a
killing frost lays low his vines.
His field of four acres has been
bearing fruit for eighteen weeks
now and the vines are still full of
blooms and berries. Many Deca
tur county ladies who take pride
in their strawberry beds would
doubtless delight to fall upon his
plan.
