Tobacco and Sugar Cane.
Rev., W. N. Ainsworth who was
for so long pastor of the Methoi.
dist church in this'city and who is
thoroughly conversant with the
possibility of the soil of Decatur
county, recently made a trip to
this section and upon his return to
Macon gave out to The Telegraph
the following interview, Mr.
Ainsworth said:
“I think the farmers of south
west Georgia will be in better
shape this fall than they have been
in years. Everybody will have
money to spend, from the planter
to the field hands.”
He says the cultivation of to
bacco and sugar cane is bound to
develop into a great business in
the southern portion of Georgia.
Referring to a recent visit to the
famous tobacco district of Deca
tur county, he said:
“I know of one man who raised
fifteen acres of Sumatra tobacco
this year under cover, and he has
sold his crop for $7,000. He has
nine acres in sugar cane and he
expects to realize enough from it
to pay all the cost of raising his
cfop of tobacco, supporting the
family and leave him the $7,000
as net profit
‘•Cohn & Co., near Attapulgus,
in Decatur county, have six hun
dred acres in tobacco and one
thousand acres in sugar cane,”
said Mr. Ainsworth, “and while I
was at Attapulgus twenty-five car
loads of machinery for a sugar
mill they proposed to erect, was
received. They propose to have
thejmtll in readiness to handle this
year’s crop of cane.”
Describing the method of culti
vating tobacco now in vogue in
Decatur county, he said: “They
rai^p the tobacco under a cover
high enough above the ground to
permit working under it with a
mule and cultivator. The cover
ing is cheese cloth, cotton drilling
and in some cases slats the size of
a lath. The object of the covering
is to prevent a too rapid evapora
tion of the moistuere in the Soil.”
In the ante-bellum days the
famous speckled leaf wrapper to
bacco was raised in Decatur coun
ty, and over the border, in the ad
jacent section of Florida. It sold
for $1 a pound in the old days.
There is a stretch of country in
the southern part of Decatur coun
ty and in Gadsden county, Flori
da, that is peculiarly adapted to
the successful culture of fine wrap
ping tobacco, and fine filler tobac-'
co, raised from Cuban seed is also
successfully grown. Tobacco is
king in Southwest G.orgia, and
sugar comes next in value as a
money crop.
