THE SEARCH-LIGHT; 0REAT IN C0TT0N M,LLS Official Organ Decatur County and Bainbridge Entered in tbe Post Office, at Hain bridge as second-class matter. s. mmi umi EDITOR AND PROPRIETOR. Bainbripor, Ga., Sept. 18. 1903 A great many people experience distress after meals; others perhaps more numerous, poor in this world’s goods, have that distressed feeling prior to meal time. Twenty-two Christians decapi tated and yet we cry “War is in evitable.” In the matter of con jugation the unspeakable Turk has the advantage of us. Southward the course of relig ion takes it way—the Salvation Army has pitched its tents in the mountains of Tennessee and will proceed to Christianize the native heathen $25,000 for a smile. Young la dies unskilled in the art will learn something to their advantage by communicating with Miss Bonnie Burnham, Writing Indiana. Par ticulars will be furnished. It is said that the brains of the Japanese, both male and female average greater weight than those of the English. Another case of quantity not quality. The other extreme may be discovered in the comparative "footing” of the two nations. And now Postmaster-General Payne states that the appointment of fourth class postmasters is gov erned by political and not civil service rules. We have no doubt of it; evidently some of the first class appointments are political effects, also. Information comes from Flori da that Capt. Bob Davis is press ing his campaign for the Demo cratic nomination in such a splen did manner as to make sure his selection over all opposition. Bob Davis will be made governor, and bis scores of Decatur county friends will greatly “rejoice with them that do tejoice” over his election. Miami, with her real, live cy clone has wrested the palm from Atlanta in the queer accident con test. Her old gentleman with his false teeth and mosquito lotion is strictly out of it when it comes to a genuine Florida hurricane. However wc learn that Atlanta intends to contest the decision on the ground of mistaken identity; every one will readily admit that it was the Atlanta carshed that cyclone intended to demolish Professional. In the year past, ending Au gust 1st, the number of bales of cotton consumed by the mills of the South was 2,000,729, while for the same period the mills of the North employed - only 1,967.- 635 bales. This showing should be sufficient to convince every one that the drift of the mills south ward until.this section practically manufactures all its cotton, is only a question of time. During the nine years past, upon the basis of consumption the South has gained 915,725 bales, that is she has figured on a com parative basis over her rorthern competitor. What does this mean, if it does not indicate that all the mills are sooner or later to be moved to ther logical location; that is among the cotton fields where the heavy expense of trans portation may be avoided. The streams of Georgia furnish ample power for their erection where such power is required or preferred. The people of the North are becoming more and more acquainted with this . fact and as rapidly as they can do so, they are rebuilding their factories and re-founding their hopes upon the commercial possibilities of the South. We have a • great stretch of country in Georgia, and as she blossoms as the rose every citizen should appear on the firing line and with the substance of his la bors help our Empire State in her struggle for commercial supremacy over the rest of the country. The Search Light does not vor persecution in anv shape or form, and it does not have to do so in order to press upon the peo ple of the rural districts the im portance of ridding themselves of the vagrants. As these indolent, theiving, lawless classes are driven from the cities, it is natural that they should flee to the country for refuge. In this way rural commu nities will become overrun with vagrants, and the only method of protecting themselves will be to employ the utmo-t vigilance in the prosecution of all parties coming within the scope and meaning of the law. The days of the festive mosqui to now are numbered. The friends of Mr. W. J. Pridg en, formerly a resident of Decatur county but who is at present liv ing at Pridgen, Fla., will be inter ested in hearing of his thrilling en counter with a wildcat a few days ago. It seems that while out riding he came across a wildcat with two kittens and attempted to kill it with a pine knot. Tne cat resent ed the attempt and returned the attack with interest. Mr. Pridgen seeing that discrestion was in his case better plan, ran to his horse and mounted; hut his feline antag onist thoroughly aroused pursued him and also mounted the horse. Had it not been for tbe timely as sistance of a friend Mr. Pridgen would surely have sustained seri ous injury. His friends are con gratulating him on his esca|>r. Last Excursion.
