LET’S HAVE 000D SVRUP.
As the time is now at hand for
our farmers to Degin the manufact
ure of their cane into syrup, we
do not thinK it amiss to express
the hope that an especial effort
will be made this year to manu
facture a better grade of syrup
than was ever before placed on
the market. ' r hose parties who
have seen proper to assail the ef
forts of those who wish to see
cane syrup stand on its merits,
have found their best argument in
the claim that so much syrup is
put upon the market in poor con
dition; and that in order to keep
down fermentation it is necessary
to add other substances than the
juice of the cane from which no
sngar has been extracted.
As we have before stated oui
only object in pressing upon our
fanners the importance of boiling
carefully their syrups, is that they
may set up a standard that will
add to the fame of their syrup,
and that their market may not be
circumscribed by the few “mixers”
who are pleased to tell the con
sumer who does knot know other
wise that Georgia cane synrp is
not fit for use until it has gone
through their hands and put in
condition.
One of the chief causes, rnd al
most the only one, which creates
fermentation in syrup, is the im
purities that are left in the syrup
while boiling. Many farmers take
absolutely no pains to strain their
juices thoroughly, trusting to the
skimmer to do the work. At the
same time every one knows that
it is an utter impossibility to sep
arate the syrup from these impur
ities after it has once come to a
boil. Every precaution should be
taken to remove impurities, dregs,
ete.; and when this is done Geor
gia farmers will find a better grade
of syrup on the market, and a far
better price will be offered for the
manufactured article.
Another secret about the mat
ter is in knowing just how tar to
boil syrup. Do not be in too great
a hurry to take off your syrup,
and you will have no sour syrup
on the market. Do not allow your
syrup to boil too far, else will it
turn to sugar. Your purpose
should be to reach that happy me
dium if possible where your syrup
will remain without souring, and
where it will not granulate. It is
a false economy to use old bar
rels.
We do not claim to know eveij.
thing about the manufacture of
table syrups, but we are in posses
sion of sufficient common sense to
know that our farmers cannot be
too particular in placing good syr--
up on the market. Poor syrup is
manufactured out ot the same
thing as the best grades; fhe only
difference being in the precautions
and attention in manufacture.
Whatever is the interest of the
farmers of Decatur county vitally
effects us, we therefore hope that
our suggestion will be understood
as emanating from a just desire to
benefit the honest tiller of the
soil in whom we have a right to
feel an interest.
The last session of the legisla
ture passed an act, wirhich has be
come a law, limiting the qualifica
tions of Jurors in the superior and
city courts, as follows;
Section i.—“From and after
the passage of this Act any juror
who has served as a grand or
traverse juror at any session ot
the superior courts, county courts
or city courts in this state shall
be inelligible as a juror at the
next succeeding term of said supe
rior, county or city court, in which
he has previously served; provided,
nothing herein contained shall
prevent any traverse juror from
serving as a grand juror at the
next term of the superior court.
Sec. 2.—“That when any name
of such juror as is disqualified by
section i of this Act is drawn,
the same shall not be recorded as
a juror, but shall be returned to
the box from which it is drawn,
and the drawing continued until
the jury is secured.”
The object of the law was to
distribute more evenly the duties
ot jury service. It was frequently
the case that one man was drawn
and required to serve on the jury
at three or four successive courts,
which undoubtedly worked a hard
ship on him. Under the new
law he will be disqualified as a
petit at the next term after which
he has served as a petit or grand
juror. But he may serve on the
grand jury the next term after hav
ing served on the traverse jury in
either court. So that if one is
drawn on the jury ior the next
term the statement that he served
at the last court will excuse him
from serving.
This law is also no doubt aimed
at a class pf jurors to be found in
some counties ot the state known
as “professionals,” that is those
who make it a business to be
handy and caught up when ta’es-
men arc needed to fill out a regu
lar panel. These are confined
mostly to large cities where courts
are in continual session.
On the whole the law is con
sidered salutary and will very
likely be enforced by the courts,
for the reason that verdicts re
turned by disqualified juries
should be defective and set aside,
and it will relieye those subject to
jury duly of some of the burden
heretofore imposed on them.
The money question seems to
be Bryan’s bete noir. He is now
engaged in a suit over $50,000,
which he claims as a bequest from
Philo S. Bennett. From the fight
he is making we presume that it
will be acceptable in any form—
gold, greenbacks or even free sil
ver on a basis of 16 to 1.
Senator Gorman says the color
scheme will be the feature of en
tertainment in the coming presi
dential election. If Roosevelt had
been gifted with second sight
Booker Washington would have
missed a good time once upon a
time.
Thomasville has out-dowied
Dowie. Recently a negro appeared
there and claimed to be not Elijah
II, but the Lord himself. . The
negro is now lodging in the lunatic
asylum—where Dowie ought to be.
