At the meeting of the executive
committee of the Officers’ Associ-
ation ofGeorgia State Troopswhich
will be held on December 31st, in
Savannah, there will be a resolu
tion introduced recommending a
reduction in the military force of
the state. The resolution which
will be submitted to the Governor
for approbation suggests that the
troops of the state be reduced so
as to consist of three regiments of
infantry of thirteen companies
each; one battalion of heavy artil
lery, of four companies; one bat
tery of field artillery; cne squad
ron of cavalry, of four companies
and two divisions of naval re
serves. [ :, 'V '* . ■ *■
At present there are five regi
merits of infantry, a regiment of
cavalry, and tour divisions of na
val reserve's: It is “ readily seen
what such a change will meap - to
the state militia if this resolution
is adopted. The sentiment among
the military officials is strongly in
fayor of the change; they 1 claim
that the new system will be a vast
improvement and of more benefit
to the state.
.' In order to accomplish the de
sired results when the resqlution
goes into effect, no company,
troop or battery disbanded for in>
efficiency or other cause, or inus ;
tered out of service can be re or
ganized, and no vacancies filled
until the troops have bzen reduced
to the total suggested in the reso
lution. Another measure that
will in all probability be consid
ered is the disbanding of all the
colored troops in the state. Such
a resolution would be unanimous
ly approved and there is no doubt
of its passage if introduced.
About two hundred and fifty of
the active and retired officers of
the state troops will attend the
meeting and although only mem
bers of the executive committee
will be allowed to vote, all mem
bers of the association will take
part in the discussion of the vari
ous measures. These questions
to be considered are of radical im
portance to the state.
