There are several thousand acres
of it in Decatur county. It is
not one continous stretch how
ever, but is found in small bodies
amounting sometimes to a few
hundred acres in a body. This
particular land grows the finest
wrapper leaf tobacco known. It
also produce the finest corn, the
finest oats, the finest truck, and
the finest of almost anything
else. It is no wonder that these
lands have commanded a price
above that of any other lands in
the state of Georgia. This was
when tobacco was selling at the
top-notch some years ago.
Col. Donalson has a beautiful
place. The farm home is sur
rounded by a lovely grove of
oaks, a well several hundred
feet deep furnishes the purest of
water. There are large barns,
packing houses and other build
ings which are necessary in the
tobacco business.
Mr. H. H. Smallwood is in
charge of the business. It is
said Mr. Smallwood is one of the
most expert tobacco men in the
country and knows his business
thoroughly. He keeps his great
tobacco fields as clean as a yard,
having it plowed every few days.
But the cultivation of the plant
is not all. Every stalk has to be
looked after. Even the leaves
are looked after separately. A
force of hands are kept at this
work all the time, either spray
ing, picking, topping, tieing, or
doing other things necessary to
the health and growth of the
plant.

The syrup product turned out
here is among the purest and best

; People from other sections have
no conception of what the lands
of Decatur are until they have
gone over them and seen what
they will produce.
At some time in the near fu
ture the editor intends going
down into the tobacco section and
spending two or three days. He
will then get a tetter idea of the
business and know better how to
describe both the cultivation and
other work necessary to bring
the weed into what may be term
