A LITTLE TALK ABOUT THE COUNIY’S ROADS.
The sum of about $50,000 has been spent on the roads of Deca
tur county within the past twelve months.
If it required $500 tj grade a mile of road this amount should
have graded 100 miles. But of course the total amount was not
spent on grading alone. Some of it was spent on bridges, other
amounts were spent on repairing. The whole thing comes un
der the head of “Roads, Bridires and Ferries,” but the most of
th ; s amount was spent on the roads aionC
We may be wrong, but if we understand the situation, count
ing the fCsv roads th^'aave been opened and that will be opened,

thing like five yews to complete $'<£ling the roads of the county,
to say nothing of the repairing. When it is finiahed the cost to
the county of grading the roads will have amounted to the sum of
six hundred thousand dollars.
We suppose this is cheap enough for eleven hundred or twelve
hundred miles of good roads. Certainl^the county’s lands will
h ive advanced in value by reason of tjw i good roads to more than
two million dollars. Viewing it from* 1 view point it is the fin-
est ipvestment the county could possm I jive made.
But this particular point is not <£e are driving at.

It is five per cent, on one million doll^s.
We are told that the county can borrovv^money at five per cent,
by issuing bonds.
Now here is our point:
Why not borrow $500,000 or $1,000,000 iy^ceSsary, employ a
civil engineer, let the grading of the roads'fut by contract (pro
vided that would be cheaper) and have th#‘oads graded and put
in first class condition in short order? *

Dr. L. D. Baggs of
Baggs and Smith will be
in Babcock to do dental
work from Monday Sept.
9th far a few days.
Do you say one milLjon dollars would be too much for the coun
ty to harrow? The answer is the county is now paying a sum tha
would amount to five per cent interest on that amount.
What’s the difference?
One difference is, the roads would be graded in less than half
the time. It would be the finest thing in the world if we could
say two years from now that Decatur had one thousand miles of
the finest roads in the United States.
People could begin hauling their products over these good
roads two or three years earlier than they will under the present
system.
And if the county continues to work along the present lines
we can see nothing but an increase of cost. A large force of con
victs will soon have to be kept continually repairing the roads if
they are kept in any condition at all. The Commissioners are per
plexed now to know just how to solve, the problem of grading
and repairing. •
Really, we would like to know if it would not be far better to
borrow the money and have the roads graded at once.
We are told if a civil engineer was employed to lay off and see
that the work was done according to specifications, the work could
be done much cheaper by contract than the county is now doing it.
Being no road expert we cannot say whether or not this is true.
One thing we do know is, that the roads would be completed in
less than half the time. And you could hardly estimate what that
would mean for Decatur county.
This entire talk is given that others better informed on the
subject of road building may take it up and discuss it till some
better and quicker plan is found, provided there is a plan better
and quicker.
