A Living Tree
A TREE is used to denote growth. We say
A “Our family tree,” ‘‘The tree of life,” etc.
We, too, have a family tree.
More than seventy years ago we commenced our
business to manufacture and market high grade
roasted coffees, ''We planted a little tree here in
New England and its branches now coyer the
country.
Over thirty years ago we planted another little
tree, White House Coffee we called it, and we
have watched it grow from a business sapling
until it is a mighty tree, strong and enduring be
cause—founded on service, a square deal, an
honest product.
White House Coffee, like a healthy tree, hie grown end
expended by its own inherent good qualities. It Is a coffee
out recommends itself. Millions of pounds have been sold.
We ask you to try a pound of White House Coffee—to note
true, coffee flavor—its rich, satisfying body—its appe

Good for
valuable
county land to Macon county. They
put that raw deal across, and Macon
county got the land. In the creation
of Peach county she gets 22,000 acres
of the, land back, still leaving Macon
county with 18,000 acres of the loot.
So that by this arrangement Macon
county is larger than when the agi
tation began. This to our mind ab
solutely kills every claim made by
Macon county against the creation of
Peach county.
The Houston and the Macon county
folks are getting out all sorts of
claims which the y assert as reasons
why the county of Peach should not
be created. An analysis of a few of
these shtiw how spurious and unten
able they are and demonstrate to the
mind of this editor the complete war
rant for the creation of the new coun
ty.
To begin with they charge that
money and whiskey were used by the
advocates of Peach county, to pro
cure the passage of the bill through
the legislature. This is a slanderous
charge against a body of as fine men
as ever sponsored an honorable and
laudable cause, and a like slander
against the honor and character of
every member of the legislature who
voted for the bill. We take no stock
in such an indictment, and charge
this claim up to the disappointment
of a lot of poor losers.
Again the name is assailed. For
our part, we feel- that if Florida can
honor her most famous product by
naming a county Orange; if North
Carolina can grace the roster of her
counties by a county named Catawba,
and if many of the states of the
Union can designate and distinguish
some leading product or industry by
so naming one of their counties, we
do well to name this new county for
the famous Georgia peach—the pro
duct that has done more to adver
tise Georgia than any other. This
new county is right in the heart of
the Peach industry, and Fort Val
ley, the county seat, ships more of
peaches than any other point in the
world. We are for PEACH COUN
TY.
The opponents of Peach county
say that they arc left with more of
negroes than whites. This seems to
be the case, but they fail to tell us
that Houston county hits always had
a majority of negroes, and that the
county of Peach will also have twice
as many negroes as whites. Indeed,
there axe abopt forty counties in tho
state in which there are more ne
groes than whites, and, certainly, in
these areas the smaller, more com
pact counties are desirable for many
reasons.
Peach county got busy and regis
tered 673 women voters, while the
rest of Houston county registered
only ■ 8§, and, forsooth, because of
the fact that Peach county has a ma
jority of- 584 registered voters is
urged as a reason why the county
should not be ratified. If the women
of Houston county were registered,
they would have more registered vo
ters, than Peach county.
And so every claim made against
the creation of Peach county crum
bles under the light and weight of
truth.
Finally, from all accounts, it is
clear that failure to ratify this meas
ure and create Peach county would
result in a most deplorable situation
in one of the finest sections of Geor
gia; and when we are Informed by
such men of Hon. H. A. Mathews,
Judge o fthe Superior courts of tho
Macon Circuit, Hon. A. C. Riley, the
judge og the City court of Houston
county, Ralph Newton, Superintend
ent of Schools of Fort Valley, tho
Tax Collector, tho Tax Receiver, the
Chairman of the Board of County
Commissioners, tho ministers (who,
by the way, were in Atlanta and ac
tively associated in tho movement
for the crpation of Peach county)
and the various other officials and
men of responsibility and character,
that tho conditions in that section
DEMAND the creation of the new
county, wo propose to stand by the
action of the people in the territory
affected, und by thu action of the
Legislature, which investigated ful-
! ly the facts and voted by a two-
I thirds majority for the Bill to create
Peach County.
The action of a small coterie of
citizens in Houston and Macon coun
ties in staging a bitter fight against
the ratification of the bill passed by
the last legislature for the creation
of Peach county, is altogether an un
usual and futile procedure.
Certain facts in connection with
the fight for the creation of Peach
county stand out prominently. To be
gin with the issue has been submit
ted directly to the people of Houston
county three times within the past
Ave years, and by unmistakable ma
jorities the people affected have each
time spoken in favor of 'division and
the ^creation of the new county.
Running on this, issue alone J. E.
Davidson was elected to the Senate
from the 23rd senatorial district, and
C. H. .Jackson'and Emmett Houser
were elected to the House of Rep
resentatives to serve in the 1921-22
session.
The bill was introduced in the Sen
ate by Senator Davidson and passed
that body almost unanimously, only
two votes being cast against the
measure. In the House of Represen
tatives the bill came to a vote at a
most unpropitious time-‘-being put
upon its pasage after noon on Friady
just the week prior to th c close of
the session. The necessary two-third
majority voted Aye, although a num
ber of those favorable to the bill
were not in attendance upon the ses
sion, four members being actually on
their way to the Hall of the House of
Representatives from lunch to vote
for the Bill. Had the bill been put
upon its passage-on one of the days
usually devoted to the consideration
,of Constitutional Amendments it is
likely Shat the measure would have
been adopted with ten or a dozen
votes to spare.
Since the people in the territory
affected have voted in favor of the
creation of the new county and the
Legislature, by the requisite two-
tkjnls majority, after a full consid
eration of the facts, passed the bill,
we believe the people of .the state
will go to the polls on November 7th
nnd ratify the measure by an over
whelming majority.
When the facts are enquired into
Macon county’s opposition becomes
positively laughable. While the peo
ple of Houston county were engaged
in the contest, Macon county made a
proposition to the Perry faction of
Houston county t hat Macon would
oppose the creation/ of Peach coun
ty if Perry would accomplish the
transfer of 40,000 acres of Houston
