“I can heartily recommend

“I could not sleep at night,
and was in a highly nervous
condition. Nothing seemed
. to help mo, and I was almost
in despair. I decided to try
Cr.rdui and sent for a bottle.
‘‘I soon began to improve.
I got so I could eat. My ap

got stronger, and I was able
to sleep well at night. I
picked up in weight and my

Berkeley, Calif.— Death dealing
sound .raves I
An experiment In this strange new
field Ims been successfully carried out
by three University of California
scientists.
They demonstrated Hint high-fre
quency sound waves, emanating from
u crystal vibrating ut the rate of
750,000 times u second, will kill large
protozoa.
So terrific and so Instantaneous
was the effect of Hie lethal sound
w.ves, ilint the gill filaments of the
protozoa were torn from their bodies.
Strange fields of conjecture for
scientists of the future have thus
been opened.
Tell of Work.
A. It. Olson, associate professor in
the department of chemistry, one of
the experimenters, pointed out that
previous xperluieuts laid been con
ducted in this same field; that he und
ills associates, F. O. Schmitt, research
assistant, and C. II. Johnson, teach
ing fellow, have merely carried on ihe
work to n higher degree of perfec
tion.
Beneficial rather than destructive
results arc more the goal of the local
scientists. Bloodless surgery has
been accomplished by the same meth
ods used to kill tlio microscopic or
ganisms.
In carrying out tlio experiment,
which was begun two years ago, they
found It necessary to invent nud to
build much of their own apparatus.
They perfected glass needles to carry
tTie sound vibrations, {lie points ot
which were so fine as to be nlmost
invisible.
’Tills delicate Instrument was neces
sary because ,all ihe experiments
must needs be carried out under
powerful microscopes. They were ex
ploring in a world unknown to the
nnked eye.
First n drop containing the protozoa
was placed on a microscopic slide and
a glass cover laid over it. The slide
,\vns then laid over an oscillator dish.
Sensitive Needle.
The oscillator dish contained a
crystal which was caused to vibrate
by the passage of an electrical cur
rent through the liquid l.n which it
was Immersed.
In conducting the experiment with
pinnariun worms, Ihe glass needle
was used. The large giid ,,f (1| °
needle was placed in ihe oscillator
dish, mid Ihe point of the needle di
rected against the worm.
So delicate was this operation that
the scientists used an extremely sensi
tive instrument, the micromanipuln-
ior, with which to guide the needle.
They discovered that when the
needle point was placed against (lie
worm, even though lightly, the vibrat
ing point instantly burned the worm.
If the shank of Ihe vibrating point
was placed across the worm, the body
would be severed.
Other men have worked on this
phenomenon of Iho effect of high fre
quency sound waves, It was ex
plained, but none have developed the
technique to such n high point. With
the glass needle r.s perfected on the
Berkeley campus It Is possible to ob
serve Ihe effect of sound waves not
only on eacli liny cell, but even on
parts of Iho cell.
