Industrial Farming
In Europe
of Budapest, Hungary. 1 went
through one of these mammoth estab
lishments, four stories high, and
which covered an entire block, every
thing from clothing, household uten
sils and groceries to every variety
of farming implements was in stock.
The farmers in a village will club
their orders together and pay spot
cash for everything bought. Nothing
is charged, but the cash must accom
pany each order. In like manner
these co-operative buying societies
own and operate their own mills for
grinding and mixing of stock food,
and mixing plants for the manufac
ture of their commercial fertilizers.
Indeed, these European farmers
have learned to manage and operate
their own business, and I am glad to
say they have had the powerful sup
port and co-operation of their
governments.
Nations Best Asset.
The governments of every European
country which our commission visited
took the broad position that the
s rongest foundation upon which any
great nation could be built was one
which was supported by a progres
sive, happy and contented agricul
tural population. From this stand
point the governments of the best
agricultural countries of Europe
have far the past half century given
every possible co-operation and assis
tance to the development of their
agricultural industry. In thi6 con
nection it can be said that, while f< r
eign farmers secure their borrowed
capital at 4 per cent per annum, the
average rate of interest on commer
cial loans for the same countries is
from 5 to 6 per cent.
We have just the reverse of that
condition in this country, only worse.
While our commercial and industrial
loans are from 5 to 6 per cent, the
average rate of interest charged
American farmers is from 8 to 10
per cent.
The European farmers are also
largely in the majority in the mem
bership of their legislature or par
liaments, while out of 420 members
of the American congress there are
only eight 8 bona fide farmers.
From trie facts presented in this
; limited article there is hut one con
clusion to he drawn, and that is, A
! merican agriculture must be indus
; trialized. It must be placed in a po
sition where it can recieve that im
petus which active working capital
in ample quantity gives to every oth
er line of successful endeavor.
