Not long ago, it happened that three young
men were returning home to Louisiana, after a
eojourn in the North, and passing through Apa
loosa, stopped at the hotel on Saturday night.
During the evening, they received word that
Gen. Caswell and Scnor Gargeda were below,
and would be happy to otter them the hospi
talities due one southron from another. The
young men gladly accepted the invitation, an
ticipating a jolly time, and were «oon deep in
the enjoyment of the General's supper and
wine.
Quite naturally, the conversation turned up
on the North, and as two of the young men
were very favorably impressed with that re
gion, the* discussion became warm. The
General, an old settler, who had always lived
in the South, had strong prejudices, and made
assertions which prompted one of his guests to
(insinuate that, ter an old man, he knew but
little. At this, be took great offense, and
threw a glass of liquor in the young man's face.
The latter, who seems to have been a noble
spirit, replied that he would not quarrel
with his host. He would apologize now, and
withdraw, and the next morning would meet
the General, in any way, with any weapon
the latter should prefer.
At this, a general dispute and confusion ;
-arose, which resulted in Gargeda knocking
down one of the young men, who, being in
toxicated, had assailed Gen. Caswell's character.
From the moment of the blow, all was commo
lion and tumult. Revolvers and bowies were ,
indiscriminately used, for twenty minutes, and ,
by the time the authorities of Apaloosa could !
interfere, the bloody work was finished. Gen. |
Caswell had been shot through the lungs with j
four balls, mid one side of his face was laid open
by a ghastly cut from a bowie-knife. Two of ■
the young men also lay dead in their blood, one
with his scalp completely blown off; and the
other having received six or eight stabs, from i
the Cuban Gargeda, who, it is said, fought like ;
a devil, with both pistol and knife. The iatter
was not dead, but had three bad wounds, which, ,
at last accounts, were liable to prove fatal. The
other two Louisianians were also very much
injured, but will probably recover. They were I
held in $3,000 bonds each, to appear, and it is
thought that a strict investigation will be had. |
CONGRESSIONAL.
Washington, Feb. sth.—The Senate was not
in session to-day.
The House refused to allow further time to ;
Mr. Campbell of Ohio, to take testimony in
the contest between himself ami Mr. Valand- 1
ingham for a seat. The House is still in ses- ‘
«ion and discussing the Kansas question.
The Union contradicts the report that the
Mormons desire to emigrate and have propos
ed to sell out Salt Lake City to the Govern
ment. The War Department is using every
effort to re-inforce the army for a Spring cam
paign.
Washington, Feb. (», —A. M.—The House
of Representatives adjourned this morning at
six o'clock, after an excited and stormy session
all'night. ' The contwas on the adoption of
the resolution offered by Mr. Harris, of Illinois,
the purport of which is, that the message of
the President and the Lecompton Constitution,
referred to a select committee of thirteen,
to be appointed by the Speaker, to inquire into
all facts connected with the Constitution, and
the laws, if any, under which the Convention
was held, and whether the provisions of the
law were complied with. Also, whether said
Constitution provides for a Republican form of
Government, and whether the population be
sufficient for a representative to Congress un
der the present ratio ; and whether the Con
stitution is satisfactory to the majority of the
legal voters in Kansas. Also, to ascertain the 1
number of votes east for the Constitution ; the
places where cast in each county; the census
or registration under which the election of del
egates was held, and whether the same was,
just and fair, and in compliance with law ; and
all other matter bearing on the subject.
The friends or the Lecompton Constitution
endeavored to take a vote in favor of the ad
niission.of.Kun<a.s, before the adjournment of
the House, while those, in favor of the passage
of Mr. Harris’ resolution endeavored to ad-'
journ.
About half-past two o’clock la-t nu ht a fight
took place between lion's. 1.. M. Keitt, of
South (’artdiua, nmlGalusba A. Grow, of Penn
sylvania. Several blows passed, the crowd of
members rushed to the scene, and there ap
peared for a time, that there were indications
of a “free tight.”
Mr. Speaker Orr succeeded, in a few mo
ments iii restoring order.
The House finally agreed to adjourn by the
passage of a unanimously adopted resolution
that the matter in dispute >honld be the special
order of the day for Monday, to which day the
House has adjourned.
Washington-, Feb. B.—The Senate to-day
referred the President's message ami Lecomp
ton Constitution to the Committee on Territo
ries. The vote stood 28 to 22. The House a
doptod by 115 to 111 votes Harris'amendment
to Stephens’ resolution, by which the Kansas
message is referred to a sekst committee of
fifteen with power to send for per*<»H*- and pa
pers. This reference precludes all possibility
of a report being male on the subject during
this session.
Washington, Feb. 9.—A joint resolution
was introduced in the Senate to take measures
fur the enforcement of a settlement of our dif
ferences with Paraguay. The proceedings of;
House were unimportant.
A footman proud of his grammar ushered in
to the drawing-room a Mr. Foot ami his two I
daughters with this introduction: “Mr. Foot i
and the two Misses Feet.”
An Irishman having been told the price of
bread had fallen, exclaimed : “ This is the first
time I ever rejoiced at the fall of my best
friend.”
The Philadelphia Gazette, speaking of a new
prima donna says : “Iler voice is as soft as a j
roll of velvet, and as tender as a pair of slop- j
«hop pantaloons.”

Hath Dye is Vile Wash, but the article that will
naturally restore the color cf lhe hair, the changing |
of which to gray, being an indication of a lack of i
proper secretions, is truly a valuable medicine.— |
Pref. Wood’s Hair Tonic, if the certificates of the
leading minds over the Union do not falsify, is the j
4>nly safe remedy for baldness, dryness, premature
change of color, and the several evidences of a lack
.of secretions at the roots of the hair which can be
found. Quack preparations abound, and “hair ton
ics” fill every “corner grocery” in the country. A
<void all “hair tonics” unless known to be the prep
aration of some man whose celebrity has become
world wide. Do not let any nostrum vender experi
ment upon your hair. Touch nothing you have not
good reason to believe is all that it purports to be.—
Prof. Wood has earned by years of severe test of the
virtues of his p operation, his present fame. Over
150 certificates are before us of the value of this hair

\\ r E would call attention to the above valuable
\ v remedy as being the best ever discovered for
Dyspepsia; and for this alone we recommend it. We
have many certificates, and could get many more,
from some of the most prominent men in our section
of the State—but we decline this mode of adverti
sing.
We only want the afflicted to give it a trial—and the
worse the cases the more marked the relief—to con
vince all that this is truly a wonderful remedy. We
only wish we had the influence to induce every suf
j serer from this terrible disease to give this remedy a

BROWN’S HOTEL,
MACON, GEORGIA,
E. E. BROWN, Proprietor.
HAVING been fully Convinced of the ex-
ceedingly annoying inconveniences to
which the travelling public, passing over our
various Railroads, were constantly subject, JHHHk
the Proprietor determined to erect and fit up, at the
most eligible and convenient point, a hotel that would
supply every demand and be entirely worthy the pa
tronage of the public. He has, after much labor and
expense, carried out his original purpose, having m
levied a site immediatelv opposite, and within thirty
yards of the Passenger Depot. Persons leaving on
the night trains can enjoy, at least, an hour’s sleep
longer here than nt any other hotel in the city ; and
the table is furnished with the best the country af
fords; the rooms are comfortably ventilated and'sup
plied with necessary furniture, and the servants are
well trained and may be summoned at any hour.
He has spared no pains or expense to meet every
want, and supply every convenience, and now every
thing being complete, he Hatters himself his Hotel af
