Edwin C. Rowland published the first issue of the weekly State Press in Macon, Georgia on October 22, 1857. In the inaugural issue, Rowland referred to his paper as a ‘Southern State Rights organ’ that aligned itself with the Democratic Party. The four-page paper circulated weekly on Thursdays at a cost of two dollars per year. The State Press was a staunch supporter of the institution of slavery and editorialized against abolitionist interests in the North. The publishers circulated a daily edition of the paper in 1859, but was out of circulation by later that year.
