The txeilrii ities of genius are wonderful.

jp - illustrious head, did he flourish a bag of
_' >ld, a small bag. and then he asked every liody
up to drink, which everybody did, and fell
n ick to allow every body else to come up
■nd do likewise. Every body else invited their
"blends, and Thomas Maize, Esq., whirled the
' tile bag of gold and produced the " tin,’’ and
paid the expense in the most cheerful manner.
Every voice proclaimed Idm a good f. ’low.

PADDY S COON HUNT.
An Irishman of our acouaintam e named Midi
acl O'Rodger, who settled in this part of the
county some years ago, lately received an unex
!>ected visitfrom his brother P t, who u as dim t
from the “sod.’’ Mike heartily welcomed his
brother, and resolved to do everything in his
|s>wer to make Lis visit an agreeable one.—
Accordingly at the end of the second day after
Pat’s arrival, which had been stent by them in
general carousal. Mike armed bis brother with
a shillelah. and immediately led off in the di
rection of a cornfield about half a mile distant,
where he assured pat they w otild enjoy a rare
evening's coon bunt.
The night was two dark to distinguish the
•Ejects of their search at any great distance,
but on entering the field and setting up a wild
Veil they soon disc overed by the rustling of
the oom stalks in various directions that they
had Iwn iuoecssfid in routing several ot them
from their hiding placet, Mike's keen eyes
has now fixed upon a large tree, which stood
A few yards distant, and bo soon had the satis
fiwtion of detecting an object moving tip its
trunk at a rapid rate. This he knew to be a
soon. and with a shout of joy, ho rushed to
the tree calling his brother to follow up. In a
moment the two sportsmen were under the
tree. Mike prepared to climb, and directed
Pat how to act when the coon reached the
ground.
“He'll be afther making a great noise to get
away, ’ said Mike, “but for your life don't let
him escape ye.”
“Och, be off up the tree will ye," answered
| :, E flourishing Jiis sbilbdeb evidentlv grow
ing impatient for the sport, “never fear but I'll
pnt an ind to him when lie comes down.’’
Mike now commenced climbing the tree with
all possible haste and succeeded verv well in
the ascent until he reached the first’ branch, s
and became hid Irom the « ml gaze of his broth
er, when he paused a moment to wacertam in
what part ot the tre<- the coon bad taken.—
While matters were in this state tie < ..on made
a sudden move among the branches which so
startled .Mike that he unfortunately let go his
hold and lull headlong to the ground.
Pat supposing him to be the coon, rnshed
lunously upon him with his shillaleh, and cotu-
Lffenced that delightful operation of putting an
end to hitn.
Mnrther l muitherl'' cried Mike attempt
;ng to rise to his feet, “in the name of bl.
Pathrick don’t be atthcr bating me to death,’
*’ Ye needn t be giving me any nv yer dirtv
excuses; sure me brither tould me ye'd be at
ther makin’ a great noise to git awav, but not a
hit ye’ll move out o’ this alive.”
Mike now sup|H»sing Ins brother to be crazy,
thought it time to make a desperate struggle
for life; so seizing Pat by the legs he sue, .sled
in throwing him to the ground, whereupon a
tough and tumble fight eoininenccd, which
lasted some lime without either of the broth
ere uttering a word.
After a violent contest, however, Mika caiue
off victorious, Pat being so completely sub- .
dtied as to render liiin helpless. But tearing 1
it was all over with him’ he began to call wild- !
ly for Mike to hasten down the tree and assist
him, or the “ ugly baste” would take bis life.
By this time Mike fully comprehended the er
ror into which his brother had fallen, and com
menced using every niwtns in his power to
bring him to his senses, which after a great deal
of persuasion he succeeded in doing.
But the coon was allowed toescape unharm
ed, ns neither of t'ie adventurers felt in a hit
mor for eotltinnlhg the hnnt that night. In
deed it was Pal s first hunting scrape, uud he
swore by all the saints it should be the last.

A CASE IN COURTA YANKEE DODGE.
Some five or seven years ago a store keeper
of Thotnasvilla, Ga.. went to New York to buy
a bill of goods. Passing through Savannah he
received from a well known firm in tow n a
letter directed to a firm in New York. This
letter was merelysoim of introduction, stating
that the hearer was a good business mini; lion
est, energetic and striving to get along, and
worthy »o far of trust. But the letter did not
definitely recommend the New York merchant
to sell to the Thomasville man.
tYhMI The Georgia man got to New York,
he went into another store ami in course of
talk showed the letter he had for the other
N. Y. firm. On the strength of this letter
(though not directed to them) this new party
sells the Georgia merchant a bill of goods on ,
lime. Before said debt was paid, the Georgia
party failed and eveu the New York house al
lowed all the effects to bo disposed of w ithout
claiming their share. Since then the New
York firm have sued the parties in this city
(W ho gave the Thomasville man the letter of
iutrodaction) for the amount of that bill, and
this week a jury in the Superior Court decided
'.gainst the New Yorker's claim, making him
pay I ‘eoAt’df court, Ac.
It seems to us very strange grounds for the
New Yowk party to base their claim npon and
re ihr.uot ti» j k that any jury could have de
rided iti their fiivor.— Sat. Georg',"*.
