’how cykus laid the cable a ballad
HT JOHN G. SAXK.
•Come listen all unto my song ;
It is not a silly fable ;
**Ti« all about the mighty cord
They call the Atlantic Cable.
'Bold Cyrus Field he said, says he,
I hare a pretty notion
»That I can run a Telegraph
Across the Atlantic Ocean.
Then all the people laughed, and said,
They'd like to see him du it;
might get half seas-over, but
Us never could go through it;
To carry out his foolish plan
He never would be able;
He might us well go bang himself
With his Atlantic Cable.
But Cvius was a valiant man,
A fellow of decision ;
And heeded not their mocking words,
Their laughter and derision.
Twice did his bravest efforts fail,
And yet his mind was stable;
He wwao’t the man to break his heart
Because he broke bis cubic.
“ Once more, mv gallnut boys he cried ;
“ Three tium) - you know the fable—”
(••I’ll make it thirty.” muttered be,
“ But 1 will lay the cable
Once more they tried - hurrah ! hurrah '.
What means this great commotion?
The Lord be praised ! the cable’s laid
Across the Atlantic Ocean !
hmid -ring the bells- for flashing through
S»jr hundred leagues of water,
Old Mother England's benisou
'Salutes her eldest daughter.
O’er all the land the tidings speed,
And soon in every nation
' They’ll hear about the cable with
Profoundest admiration!
Now long live Buck, and long live Vic,
And long live gallant Cyrus;
\Aad may nis courage, faith and zeal
•With emulation tire us.
Jknd may we honor evermore
Thr manly, bold, and stable,
sAnd tell our sons to make them brave,
How Cyrus laid the cable.
BLEEDING KANSAS
We have bcv£ under the impression all-along
i (*ay® the Augusta Dinpatch} that our brethren'
in Kansas, whether from the North or South,
were existing in extreme destitution, with fe.v
<»f the necessaries of life (not to ment ion the
luxuries) except Sharp’s Hides and other indi
gestible food. But we find, we have been la
boring under a sad mistake, and the inhabitants
of Ixcempton, if no other city, have Bills of
Fare daily spread before them,dashbills that the
• proprietors ot St. Nocholn<, the Astor, and
other ccle lira ted Hotels in this section, may try
to imitate, but will never be able to equal.—
A friend has furnished us with the following Bill
of Fare, served up at the Burk and Breck House
at Lecompton. Epicures should give it a care
ful perusal--it will make their mouths water,
and perhaps lie the means of good riddance to
this section and not much gain to Kansas.—

they may. They have curious names for some

SI.ATE I’ENI U.S.
Catholic Fi nkiialh. —Bi-diop O'Connor, of
Pittsburgh, with the view of doing away with
unnecessary expenses and large displays at
Catholic funerals, has issued the following regu
lations to be observed there hereafter, whenev
er the performance of the Church service is
desired:
1. The funeral, at wliich the friends of the
deceased, or of the surviving relatives, are ex
pected to Imj present, shall be confined to the
procession from the house to the church, and
the obsequies performed in the church.
2. No carriages shall bo permitted hut those
containing the pall-bearers and the immediate
relatirct of the deceased. The wearing ot
mourning shall be a test of their connection j
with the deceased when more than two car
riages are used.
8. AH others attending the funeral go on
f<>ot from the house to the church, and are con
sidered dismissed when the obsequies arc per
formed.
4. The priest who is to officiate will receive
tlie corpse at the door of the church, in aecor
ance with the requirements of the ritual. He
•hould be informed beforehand who ba«charge
of the funend. Before receiving the corpse lie
will ask this person publicly whether he en
gages to sec the rule here laid down faithfully fol
lowed up to that time. I'nlcss an answer be giv
en in the affirmative, or if it Ih» certain that
they really have been disregarded, the corpse
will not he received into the church.
5. When more than two carriages are used
♦he person in charge of the funeral should
bring a list of the same to the officiating priest,
and satisfy him that they arc occupied by the j
persona above referred to. This list, signed
by the priest, will entitle such carriages to ad
mittance to the cemetery. Without such a
document, the gate-keeper at the cemetery w ill
not admit more than two carriages at any fu- ;
neral.

Hard but Fair.—The Managersot the Lou
isville Theatres have set their faces against
crinoline, and have determined that an article,
which, like calico, “covers a multitude of sins,”
shall not longer militate against their pecuni
ary interests. In accordance with this brave
( determination they have publicly announced.
I that hereafter, every lady who is so crinolined
as to spread over more than one seat will be
charged for two. We take it, ladies will be
tolerably scarce about the Louisville Theatres
until this rule is revoked.
Important to Farmers. —h is ascertained
[ by practical farmers that white u heat is fur
' more liable to weevil joint worm and every ill
that wheat is heir to, than red. The Fredc' 1

Tragic Scene in a Court Hoi sk. Hampden
Sidnev, Sept. 20. —At Prince Edward Court
House, to-day, the examination of a negro,
charged with rape on a married lady, was to
take place, but was <1 fcred, in the absence of
counsel. As he was about living removed from
1 the Court House, the woman's husband, who
was present, rushed on him with a knife and
cut his throat from ear to ear. Physicians
present drcsscil the wond, and gave it as their
opinion that the negro would not die, as the
jugular vein was not servered. The husband
was arre.-ted. and shortly after bailed ’ in the

Some Snake.—A huge rattlesnake was re

feet mid a half long, about nine inches around
the Immlv. ami had eleven rattles. Having ob

which wa« extracted by dub force, I found it
to lie seven-eights of an inch in length. The

near the root and in front; which, after fol
lowing the tube along the convex side, enters
into the wound it inflicts by means of a nar
row slit begining about one-fourth of an inch
from the extreme point of the fang, and termi
nating almost at it. The tube contained an
amber-colored tiui<l, which no doubt was the
I poison itself. This snake, with his wide
spread jaws, looked terrible-—AVa/y/tfree Star.

Nervous, Rheumatic, and Neuralgic Affections, it
has in numerous instances proved highly beneficial,
and in others affected a decided cure.
This is a purely beneficial compound, prepared on
strictly scientific principles, after the manner us thr
celebrated H<»lland Professor. Bocrhavc. Because, of
its great success in most of the European States, its
introduction into the United States was intended
more especially for those of nur fatherland scattered
here and there over thr face of this mighiv couiitry. (
Meeting with great success among them, I noufc otter
it to flu- American public, knowing that its truh won
derful medicinal virtues must be ucknowlr<lg«*d.
It is particula ly recominendeil to those pers-ms
whose constitutions may have been impaired bv tin- (
continuous use of ardent spirits or other forms rtf dis
sipation. Generally instantaneous in ett’ect. it finds
its way directly to the seat of life, thrilling and quic\

spirited, it will prove a grateful aromatic cordial, pos

CAUTION:
The great popularity of this delightful \romalin*
induced many imitations, which the public shouly
guard against purchasing. Be not persuaded to bud
anything else until ymi have giicn Bocrhavc’s Hol
