Ill the last .Spirit of the Times wc find the
following sparkling article :
What is tlie greatest number of puppi, s,‘mv Mapper,
that you ever knew in one pointer bitch's litter ?
Dost give it up ? “Thereby hangs a tale."
A few weeks since, your correspondent was a can
didate before the Legislature, for the offico of Solici
tor, in which race it is matter of record, that he got a
“demnition” threshing. He had divers friends iu the
good c-ity of Montgomery, and among them was Mae,
(who thought himself politically ruined because he
missed a big fellow, three consecutive shots, with a
first rate revolver.) Jiao was “dead in” for “our
ticket,” nnd proposed to do some "h ading" of rather
a novel sort. Said he to tlie candidate—"Your point
er Ijola; will have puppies shortly, eh T" “Yes.”
“Well, leave the disposing of them to me—don't pro
mise one away; tlie litter must bring you votes
enough to elect you.”
So, Mae—lhr>/ tay—went to work, promising Lo
la’s puppies to young members who seemed to he
favorable." liis description of the hitch abounded
in superlatives—ami ns to that, they were all deserv
ed. Hie shooting men, and some that wanted to be
shooting men, were “all alive” to get specimens of
stock of such transcemlant qualities.
When the candidate was referred to about his dogs,
he gently waived the matter, saying that his friend
Mac hud sotueliow got control of all that, and so forth
and so on.
Things progressed gloriously ; Mac reported liis
siicccssos daily, only mice remarking, slyly, that he
afraid it would tlrni/t Jsdii, sadly, to coinply
witli all his engagements ; and at last, the day set u-
part for the election arrived.
“Our ticket's" candidate was in the rotunda, doing
its best, an hour before the two Houses met iu con
vention. Presently a very young member stepped
up, slapped him 011 tlie shoulder, said he was for “our
ticket,’ and wound up with, “don't forget iny pup
py T” Several others came up about this time, all
"for our ticket,” and each anxious to know when his
puppy would reach the luctroiiolis. The candidate
grew uneasy ; the crowd still thickened—and nearly
every one was saying something about llie fine point
er puppy he was about to receive. Tlie candidate
mentally counted the claimants, aud when lie neared
the figure 31—and saw others approaching who look
ed as if they were “in," too, he incontinently left for
his hotel.
Two hours afterward.-, there was a solemn meeting
of two friends, in a .-mall room, on the fourth floor of
the Exchange.
"Well,” said Mac, “they've heat you, old fel ;
couldn’t he helped ! After yon left, the fellows 1 had
promised the imps to, got to cross-questioning one
another, slid then they got to cross-questioning »«■ ;
and the upshot was, tliey found out I had engaged a
rather Urge litter; nndso (he Innt one of ’rmbolled !
Ah, old fel ! if that spoke hadn't broke, you’d better
believe, you'd have made Shell-road time !’’
“Saw, Mae, on honor, how many puppies did you
promise, and when and where did you promise to de
liver them !”
Mac scratched his head, thoughtfully, and remark
ed—
_ “I pledged about ns many as generally oome at one
time—to Tie delivered herej within ten’ days ; thirty-
serrn of'm 1 and alt dogs at that /”
Poor Ixda ! No wonder Mac thought it would
strain her to comply.

A MONG the many preparations for the growth of
the Hair, this OOLDKH GLOSS takes the

cause it has proved the most effectual in Baldness.
2d. Because it imparts a beautiful dark gloss and
delightful perfume to the Hair. 3d. Because the La
