1 )isrospeitiv cly Dedicated to the renowned
Bachelor who wrote an Essavof several pages
on an Hour’s Experience with a baby.
Bl MART «Ut
Twa* night, and all day long I’d strove,
To sothe my little suffering dove.
Oli, whose beside a mother's love
Could rightly nurse a baby?
I laid me down to steal some rest,
It's head was pillowed on my breast;
In dreams, my husband’s love still blessed
Mo and my darling baby.
Rut soon its piteous meanings broke
My rest, and trom my dreams I woke
To feel its pulse's feverish stroke.
My little suffering baby!
" Anil oh, how hot its little head !
Rise quick and get a light, dear Fred!
Something unusual, I’m afraid.
Is ailing our poor baby.”
Slowly he rose, with anllen grace.
The light gleamed on bit cloudy face—
I never kuew 'twas a (man’s!) place
Before, to tend a bsliy 1"
My pulses throbbed j a terror crept
Throughout my heart; aud while I wept,
This noNe man lay down and dept.
And left me with my baby.
Oh, yon, light-hearted, beauteous maid,
Whose greatest care’s to curl and braid.
Far from life’s lessons yon have strayed.
If you ne’er think of babies.
Then learn from me, a matron staid,
F»r tbit alone teat minis mode.
After her sovereign lord's obeyed,
To nurse and tend tbe babies.
And man, thon noblest work of (toil!
Thou, who eaust never see the load
Thv wife sustains, through life's rough road,
With thee and with her babies,
Oo kneel nnon thy mother’s grave
Aud think that every life she gave
Made her Death’s victim or Life's slave;
Then love your wife—and babies!
And you, you musty bachelor,
Who could not watch a liltle flower.
And keep it tearless one short hour—
Pour victimised “ wee ” baby !—
Go hide your gran, diminishes! bead
Within your mother's feather bed,
And ne’er through life may it be said
Yon have a wife or baby!

The Washington Correspondent of the Xew
Orleans Delta lias the following:
The solemn and remarkable pertinent words
uttered yesterday by ltev. Mr. Millburu at
the funeral in Washington, of Hon. Brookins
Campbell, has caused considerable remark.—
The boldness of the preacher in alluding so
pointedly, in the presence of honorable legis
lators, to the temptations and sins which beset
them on every side, and to which, it is gener
ally believed, too many of them are prone to
turn a greedy car, is worthy of all praise, and
fit to bold up as a pattern to some of our soft-
spoken clergymen. There has been nothing
like it by the way of clerical admonition to
persons in high places since the days of Bos-
auot. How the lobby members, the specula
tors on the treasury, the place-Beekers, and
the railroad, steamboat and inail-coutractors,
as well as their well-known confederates in ci
ther House and among the Government offi
cials, must have quailed when the blind preach
er uttered the “words of truth and soberness”
contained in the following extract:
“ It is said of the lawyer that his profession
furnishes the meanest and darkest side of hu
man nature, and this may be said with equal
justice of tbe legislator. You are, gentlemen,
constantly surrounded by mean and fawning
supplicants, aud brought in sight of contempt
ible and degraded men who sell the conscious
ness of rectitude and barter tbe uprightness of
t heir nature for mere place and favor, and sue
tor personal benefits in tbe attitude only due
to God. You hold your places by popular fa
vor. Many a one who would stand unappli
ed mpresence of the throned tyrant licks the
dust in presence of the million. Simply and
meanly they bow before the masses, and pro
nounce their wishes the very dictum of the
God’s. It is hard for man to clear himself of
the mist around him, and for those in your po
sition to hold and venerate high conceptions
of human character; yet remember this is the
time of your probation, and that yon are to
press your way to virtue, wisdom and piety
under God. No liar, cheat, intriguer, or truck
ler, or base minded coward, can stand in God’s
presence unawed.”

We give an anecdote illustrative of the unpa
ralleled dexterity of the Indians with the sword
as well as of Napier’s simplicity of character.
After the Indian battles, on one occasion a
famous juggler visited the camp and performed
Ids feats before the General, lus family, and
staff. Among other performances, tins man
cut in two, with a stroke of his sword, a lime
or lemon, placed in the hand of his assistant,
sapier thought there was some collusion be
tween the juggler and his retainer. To divide
>y a sweep of the sword on a man's hand so
-mall an object without touching the flesh, he
idieved to be impossible, though a similar in-
ident is related by Scott in Ins romance of
.he “ Talisman.” To determine the point, the
tenoral offered his own hand for the experi-
leut, and lie stretched out his right arm. The
i.iggler looked very attentively at the hand,
md said that lie would not make the experi-
neiit. “ 1 thought I would find you out 1" ex
claimed Napier. “ But stop,” a dded the other,
“ let me see your left hand.” The left was
■ubmitted, and the man then said firmly—“If
you will hold your arm steady I will perform
: he feat.” “ But why the left, hand and not the
eight ?” “ Because the right hand is hollow in
i he centre, and there is a risk of cutting off the
liurnb; the left is high, and the danger will he
.css.” Napier was startled. “I got fright
ened,” lie said. “ I saw it was au actual feat
■ •f delicate swordsmanship, and if I had not
ibttscd the man as I did before my staff, and
challenged him to the trial, I honestly ac
knowledge I would have retired from the
encounter. However, I put the lime on my
baud, and held out my arm steadily. The
juggler balanced himself, and with a swift
troke cut the lime in two pieces. 1 felt the
edge of the sword on my hand ns if a cold
thread had been drawn across it; and so
much,” he added, “ for the brave swordsmen
of India, whom our fine follows defeated
at Meancc.” This anecdote is certainly
a proof of the sincerity of au honest mind,
ready to acknowledge error, and of bravery
and calmness in expiating that error.
Horrors ok War.—Col. besuzier waj one
of the most efficient military officers in the
French sendee under Napoleon, aud from the
Military Memoirs, a correspondent of the New
York Evening Post translates the following
from chapter IV., Battle of Austcrlitz:
“At that moment in which the Russian nrmy
was making its retreat, painfully, but in good
order, on the Ice of the Lake, the Emperor
Napoleon came riding at full speed towards
tin) artillery; “ You arc losing time!” cried
he; “ Fire ujton those masses!—they must he
t-ugtilphcd! lire upon the ice!" The order
given remained unexecuted for ten minutes;
in vain several officers and myself were placed
on the slope of a lull to produce the greater
effect; their halls and mine rolled upon the ice
without breaking it up. Seeing that, 1 tried
a simple method of elevating eight howitzers;
the almost perpendicular fall of these heavy
projecilea produced the desired effect. My
method was followed immediately by the
adjoining batteries, and in less than no time
wc buried 15,000 Russians iuid Austrians
under the waters of the Lake.”
