Remarkable Instances of Heroism.
The Rev. Mr. Scuddcr, of India, in a letter
to the Christian Intelligencer, gives the follow
ing instances of heroism, called forth by the
Indian mutinies:
Let Americans never bo ashamed that Eng
lishmcn arc their forefathers. Englaud is
noble country. Her sons are heroes, and her
daughters arc heroines. This rebellion has
brought deeds that deserve to be associated
with those valorous actions, which we with
throbbing pulses, read. in history. In one
place a lady and her husband fled in their car
riage. He stood upright. She lashed the
horses through a band of mutineers, while he
with cool aim, shot dead one who seized the
horses’ heads, and another who climbed upon
tho carriage behind to cut him down. On
they fled, till again they found themselves a-
mong foes, and a rope stretched across the
road made further progress appear impossible.
True to herself, she dashed the horses at full
speed against tlie rope, and as they, bearing
it down, stumbled, she by rein and whip, rais
ed them, while her husband’s weapons again
freed them from those who succeeded in leap
ing upon them. He was wounded, but both
escaped with their lives. In another place, ■
young lady, the dmiglitcr of an officer, shot
seven mutineers before they killed her. A
captain, pressed by his Sepoys, with his good
sword, slew twenty six of them before ho fell ‘
“A Dead Sure Tiling,”
An acquaintance, whilo passing over the
Ohio and Mississippi Railroad from St. Louis
to Cincinnati, a day or two since, overheard
the following conversation between a quartette
of ladies and gentlemen, which struck him as
being sufficiently ludicrous to warrant publi
cation. The two ladies it seems were from
Kansas, and the gentlemen were traveling ac
quaintances. The conversation turned on the
subject of matrimony, and one of tho gentle
men, moved perhaps bjr the tender passion,
asked his female companion if she was married
“I was married,” sighed tho blooming dame,
but alas I know not if my husband be dead
or alive. I heard that he was accidentally
killed in Fittsbnrgh a few weeks ago, and I
am now going there to ascertain whether the
report bo true or false.”
Well, I’ve got a dead sure thing on my
husband,” remarked the other lady, “for I saw
him buried five weeks ago."
Our friend, who relates this anecdote, sud
denly disappeared beneath tho voluminous
folds of his overcoat on hearing this last re
mark, and when he again made his appearance
his face plainly indicated that some strong in
ternal commotion had token place within his
system.—Cincinnati Commercial.
An Important Mail Arrangement
CONSUMMATED.
The long sought rearrangement of tho selicd
ulcs of connection and running time for the
transportation of the great Southern and
South-western mails from this city went into
operation to-day. For five years post the
Post-Offico Department is said to have been
endeavoring to effect this object, by which
sixteen hours (more than a full business day)
aro gained between Washington City and
Memphis, Tennessee; fourteen hours between
Washington and Nashville; twelve hours be
tween Charleston and Nashville; and a pro-
] >ortionate saving on the direct route between
iVashington and New Orleans.
The difficulty has been for the most part in
harmonizing the running of the oleven railroad
companies whoso respective roads are necessa
rily employed in transporting the mails in
question which leaving this point pass through
Richmond, Va., Wilmington, N. C., Kings
ville and Charleston, S. C., Augusta and At
lanta, Ga., Montgomery, Ala., New Orleans,
Nashville and Memphis, connecting all inter
mediate points, and supplying a vast scope of
adjacent territory witli the mails.— Washington

We regret to have to chronicle the death of
another of our citizens in the person of Fred
erick Towle of tho firm of Towle & Myers of
this city. He died in New York, on tho 29th
October, of inward rheumatism—a disease with
which he had long been afflicted. Mr. T. was
a native of New liamshirc, but had resided in
this city since 1827, during the most of which
time ho had been engaged in business as a
Silver Smith. Though he commenced life
poor, he had succeeded in accumulating, by
industry and frugality, a handsome compe
tency. He died in tho communion of the
Presbyterian Church, (having been converted
under tho preaching of tho Rev. Dr. Hoyt, of
Athens, Ga., during a vist of that distinguish
ed divine to this city in 1843, of which denom
ination he was a highly esteemed, useful and
liberal member. He leaves no family, having
never been married. His ago was about six
ty.—Floridian.
A Great Blessing to the Afllictcd.
Dr. M’Lanc, tho inventor of tho celebrated Liver
Pills, prepared by Fleming Bros., Pittsburgh, Pa
used these Pills for several years in his practice, be
fore he could bo induced to offer them to tho public
in such a manner as to make them known through
out tho country. This learned Physician felt the
samo repugnance that all high-minded men of science
feel in entering the lists agidnst those unscrupulous
.mpirics who obtrude their useless nostrums upon
tho public, and rely upon a system of puffing to sus
tain thorn. Convinced, however, of the real value
of tho Liver Pills, and influenced by the strong dic
tates of dntv. tho Doctor finally authorized Fleming
Bros., of Pittsburgh, Pa., who are now tho solo pro
prietors, to manufacture and place them before the
publie. This great medicine has not disappointed
tlie expectation of his friends, the medical faculty at
whose instance he was induced to piaco them before
tho public in their present popular form. From
every quarter do wo hear tho most gratifying account
of their wonderful curativo effects—tho East and
tho West, the North and the South, oro alike laden
with ‘tidings of great joy’ from tho afflicted. Tbcso
wonderful Pills have completely conquered that
groat scourge of America, tho Liver complaint.
TIT Purchasers will be careful to ask for DR-
