The 4th has come and gone and was

the frying pans fixed them up foreatingi
and men. women and children all had
a fine time with plenty to eat. The
string band present gave us excellent
music. It was too good to remain in

IS IT RIGHT
FOR AN EDITOR TO RECOMMEND
PATENT MEDICINES?
From Sylvan Valley News, Brevard,
N. C.
It may be a question whether the edi
tor of a newspaper has the right to pub
licly recommend any of the various pro
prietary medicines which flood the mar
ket, yet as a preventive of suffering we
feel it a duty to say a good word for
Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera aud Diar
rhoea Remedy. We have known and
used this medicine in our Family for
twenty years aud have always fouud it
reliable. In many cases a dose of this
remedy would save hours of suffering
while a physician is awaited. We do
not believe iu depending implicitly on
any medicine for a cure, but we do be
lieve that if a bottle of chamberlain’s
Diarrhoea Remedy were kept on hand
aud administered at the inception of an
attack much suffering might be avoided
aud in very many cases the presence of
a physician would not be required. At
least this has been our experience dar
ing the past twenty years. Sold by Win

Is ij in the epoch when she is ou the
eve of making her first brilliant appear
ance in the. work of humanizition
through Alexander? Was the decline of
Rome when she became the cradle of
Christianity? I say it was not All the
arguments deduced from the past are
no proofs at all with regard to the
future, for the past has ouly been a nec
essary introduction into the grand
arena.
There are only two courses which can
be pursued. Oue is a close selfish course
refusing to aid in civilization and chris
tiauity, caring nothing for the woes aud
sorrows of others, only wishing to live
a secluded life and gradually dwindle
aud contract, aud finally pass oat of ex
istauce. The other is a courso by which
the human family is aided to gain high
er aspirations, the heathen is carried
protection and the religion of Jesus
Christ, and wherever the human cries
for help, protection and freedom from
despotism are heard. We patriotically
place on the watch tewer of justice and
right the grand old ensign of a mighty
nation, the stars and stripes; having on
ly iu view the better welfare, and the
expansion, and not the contraction of
our old country. Which course will she
pursue? Which cause should she pur
sue? There are some here to night who
would make you believe that the former
caurse is the better one for her to pur
sue.
Shall it be recorded by authentic his
tory that at the very moment when the
United States was on the eve of impos
ing her civilization and inculcating her
glorious religious principals and freedom
ou a heathen people bowed down under
tie weight of superstition aud despot
ism, that she paused to couat in cents
an 1 dollars the cost, and having fouud
that it would cost a few more almighty
dollars than she would immediate
ly receive, retraces her foot-steps, and
turns a deaf ear to the pleading of mil
lions of dying souls, because she calcu
lated their worth by the golden eagle?
God forbid that such should ever be re
corded of tho grand old United States of
America.
