THURSDAZ. OCTOBER 19, 1899.
ggr To Our Patrons.
\Vj desire to say to oar inviy subscri
bers that our Mr. Morris, the traveling
representative of The Economist will
start out next week to see you all aud
collect the amount due for subscription.
Wo know it will be a pleasure to you
all to pay up back dues and to pay lor
another year in advance if you have any
loose change about the house, for you
ire all friends and want to see The
Economist prosper. Look out for Mr.
Morris aud leave the atnout at homo i!
you have to be away any. \\ o think that
you feel enough interest in the success
of the paper not to forget this appeal
and will say no more.
The Saturday Review, of Atlanta, is
one of tho brightest of our exchanges
aud is greatly appreciated. It is edited
by women and ovory woman in the
state ought to take it.
It is said that the Sultan of Turkey
has granted permission to an English
syndicate to build a railroad to the
Garden of Elen. Adam and Eve’s ex
perience there is net very encouraging
to the traveling public to go there, but
wo hope the road will be built.
San Francisco enforces her laws on
millionaires as well as on the man worth
a dollar. One of her millionaires was
recently sentenced to twenty-four hours
in jail for spitting in a street car. If
there was less discrimination on this
line the people at large would have
more respect for the laws of our land.
The old parties a.e still trying to fool
the people and make them believe they
favor reforms. It does look like intelli
gent men would get their eyes opened
sometime and realize, as'.reformers have
long since done, that the leaders of the
two old parties never intend to carry
out any promises made for the good of
the masses.
Admiral Dewey is only a man ‘ for a’
that” and we see no ssnse in the Amer
ican people going wild over him. The
daily papers have made themselves rid
iculous in the last few weeks by their
hero worship of Admiral Dewey. The
world admits him to be a great man and
worthy the respect and love of all Amer
icans, but there are huudreds of men
just as great, just as brave, noble and
true as he and deserving of as much re
spect and admiration.
Hen of Wealth
We do not sympathize or encourage
those who unreasonably antagonize
wealth and envy men just-beoause they
are wealthy. The man who honestly
make a fortune is fortunate indeed, and
if he uses it to the right advantage and
for the bettering of humanity aud giv
ing employment to those who need as
sistanoe.is a benefactor to his race aud
deserves the love aud respect of his fel
lowmen. The class ot wealthy men that
are a curse to the world and deserving
of litth respect, is the class that have
do regard for the rights of others less
f rtuuale, who have uo feeling for hu
manity aud thoir only desire is to crush
others who cauuot help themselves aud
then ut their misfortunes. Mou
ey iu the control of such men is a curse
to the masses aud we have little regard
for the feelings or wishes of wealthy
men of this kind.
Government Ownership.
A strong point in favur of government
ownership of railroads telegraphs and
telephones is the saving to the American
people. The receipts of the Western
Union Telegraph Cos. were $23,
916,000, expenses $17,835,000, profits $6,
090.000. The Bell Telephone Cos. made
gross earnings of $5,131,000, in 1£97,
and paid dividends of $3,683,000. These
are things for men with any HORSE
sense to think aDout and if they have
much of this important ingredient in
their craniums they will realize that
it is time for them to cut loos from the
old parties that are afraid to advocate
government ownership and go with the
reform party that is NOT afraid to ad
vocate what they know to bo good for
humanity at large. Think over this a
little.
To Reduce Interest Race.
Maj H. H. Carlton, representative in
the gen ral assembly of this state from
Clarke County, will introduce in tho
coming sessiou a bill to reduce the con
tract rate of interest from eight to sev
v:n p r cent, thus making the contract
rate aud the state or legal rate the same.
This is an important matter and will
benefit the peoplo if ho succeeds in get
ting it through. The rates ought to be
lower than seven per cent Mi*sa hard
times* The country needs cheaper mon
ey than we are getting. Cheap money
aud higher prices for labor aud the pro
ducts of labor is what the country must
have to be prosperous end the masses
contented.

Some beoome weary and fatigued in
seeing such unexpected scenery, and
decide to take the Lightning Express at
Suicide Junction, after which there are
no more stops until they reach the Fear

There ere no return tickets on this
line as all trains run in one direction.
This line is well equipped with slee

formal church members.
It is an old established line, very of
ten called “The Popular Route.”
Sacred Writ recognizes it as the
“Broad Way,” and “many there be”
pass ovor it. It also mentions it as a
“Way that soemeth right unto a man,
but the end thereof are the ways of
death.”
We givo the above at the request of
one of the good men of our city who
haudod it to us lust week too late for
that is-ue. The traveling public would
act wisely in avoiding this route iu their
journey through life.

In Memory
Of Harrv Mays, the little son of Rev.
and Mrs. H. 3. Mays, of Jefferson. Har
ry was one of the sweetest children we
ever knew and his death on lhursday
afternoon, October 6ih, 1889, cast a
shadow over the hearts of many peo
ple, He was sick with scarlet fever
nearly two weeks aud for several days
before his death it seemed that God had
chosen him, and at last the angel of
death plucked the blossom and bore it
above to adorn the palace of the Master.
The bereaved father and mother have
