Last Quarterly Confer
ence at M. E. Church.
UNANIMOUS REQUEST IS MADE
FOR RETURN OF PASTOR.
The last quarterly conference of the
Winder Methodist church which is the
concluding business meeting of the
church year, was held last Wednesday
night, with a good attendance. An en
thusiastic church conference had been
held during the preceding week for
the election of the various committees
for next year’s work. At this confer
ence Rev. W. T. Hamby, presiding el
der of the district, was in the chair,
to hear the reports of the various de
partments.
The report of the pastor, Rev. L. W.
Collins, showed an increase of 118 mem
bers during the .year, the largest gain
in the church’s history. Congregations
have been large throughout the year,
especially at the popular Sunday night
services, when the church has many
times I>een taxed to its capacity. The
new building was completed early in
the year and has proven itself to be
admirably adapted to all the various
activities of the church. Many great
preachers have been heard during the
year, and a week's efficiency conference
has developed an improved organiza
tion. The revival was far-reaching
and had helped not only the immedi
ate community but the life of the en
tire county.
The report of the Sunday school was
in superlatives. A membership of 650
was reported, exceeding the member
ship of the church which was 625. An
average attendance of 320 has been
maintained during the year which is the
largest in its history, being more than
double the average of two years ago.
These figures do not show, however,
the aggressive spirit of the school and
the efficiency of its teaching staff. It
is now the largest school in the dis
trict.
The entire membership is enlisted in
active effort to make the school a pow
er for good and in reaching the outsid
er, During the yenr large training
classes have studied three books in the
teacher training course, and graded
lessons and departments have been in
stalled. After a most successful term
of office, Mr. W. T. Robinson retired in
favor of Mr. L. S. Radford, as super
intendent.
The work of the Woman’s Missionary
society and of the local circles also

come in for much praise. The former
has had a very successful year under
the presidency of Mrs. J. T. Strange,
while the local circles are very active
under the leadership of Mrs. A. A.
Camp.
The Men’s Club, one of the new or
ganizations of (ho church, with Mr.
Paul Brooksher, as president, has more
than justified its existence in mobiliz
ing the men of the churcn for service.
The organized classes have also done
fine extension work during th“ sum
mer in sending teams to the rural Sun
day schools to assist in
and showing the interest of a big
brother in the neighboring schools. The
work of the laymen of the church Is
under the leadership of Mr. E. A. Starr,
who is also a delegate to the annual
conference in Atlanta.
Dr. Geo. W. DeLaPerriere heads the
Educational committee for the laymens
work; Mr. A. D. McCurry is chairman
of the evangelistic committee; Mr. R.
L. Rogers of the Social Service Com
mittee, Mr. John Kilgore of the Stew
ardship committee, Dr. E. E. DeLaPer
riere of the Missionary committee, and
Mr. Paul Brooksher of the Lay Speak
ers Committee.
