In Meeting 801 l Weevil and “Biask
, Root” Conditions Assistance
Rendered Georgia Farmers.
Atlanta, Ga. —(Special.)—Urging act
ive and efficient co-operation among
all atate institutions and agencie3
working along agricultural lines, State
Kntomologist E. Lee Worsham has just
submitted his annual report to the com
missioner of agriculture for transmis
sion to the legislature.
While engaging in many important
fields of activity to the farmer, the
fruit grower and the horticulturist, the
state department of entomology has
rendered no more far-reaching benefi
cial service to Georgia than in devis
ing methods to meet the coming on
slaught of the Mexican cotton boll
weevil and at the same time develop
ing strains of cotton that will success
fully resist the attack of “black root”
or the “wilt” disease, so disastrous to
cotton, particularly in south Georgia.
The problem of meet mg both these
conditions proved a peculiarly difficult
one in Georgia, because the early ma
turing varieties of cotton, planting of
which constitutes the only practicable
safeguard against the attacks of the
boll weevil, were all found peculiarly
susceptible to the “black root” dis
ease, which had reached the point of
destroying a million dollars’ worth of
cotton in south Georgia every year.
Nevertheless, Mr. Worsham went to
work on it early, and, with the aid
of capable assistants, especially Mr. A.
('. Lewis, now reports that next sea
son the department wilt fie ready to
distribute seed that are “wilt resistant
and mature early enough to avoid boll
weevil in a large measure."
A Valuable Development.
Doubtless there has been no more
valuable agricultural development for
Georgia the last decade than this, and
the process is one which will be push
ed on to complete solution.
One of the important results of the
department's experiment,-; along these
lines was the development of a hy
brid cotton of long staple variety,
which can he successfuly grown
throughout south Georgia, and which
can he used in the course of time to
take the place of sea island cotton.
At last season's prices, this staple
would he worth from IS to 20 cents
a pound
My no means of secondary import
ance is the growing interest noted in
cotton breeding. Cotton breeders’
clubs have been organize I by the de
partment in 25 south Georgia counties,
and these have proven a great source
of inspiration to the farmers in the
selection of their own cotton seed for
planting instead of paying from $2 to
$1 a bushel for it.
The department makes no claim to
having completely nullified the com
ing onslaught o' the boll weevil; but
i all i; eiiut one will, it has unques
tionably developed a strain of cotton
that will, in a large measure, over
come the attack through early maturi
ty, and, at the same time, resist the
disastrous "wilt” disease.
Greatest Service to Greatest Number.
* While this is the most far-rea lung
field of activity of the depa tment,
there are many other important agri
cultural industries which it has mate
rially benefited; and. as Mr Worsham
states in the conclusion of his report,
the department is proceeding upon
the policy of rendering the greatest
possible service to the greatest num
ber, with the funds which are avail
able.
During the year the department in
spected 4 333.300 trees and plants in
Georgia nurseries, of which 1,027,600
were peach trees. It is now practical
ly impossible, under the department’s
watchful care, for a diseased tree or
plant to come into the state.
As the result of directions given the
farmers, hundreds of thousands of
dollars were saved during the sum
mer in meeting the attacks of the
army worm and cotton caterpillar.
Farmers meetings were held in va
rious sections of the state, and spe
cial lectures were given by Mr. Wor
sham on cotton insects at the cotton
school held at the State College of
Agriculture in January. The depart
ment has sought to co-operate active
ly at every possible point, with other
agencies working along agricultural
'tines, with the result of material ben
efit to the farmer. One instance not
ed was the procuring for south Geor
gia farmers of arsenate of lead at
actual cost during the outbreak of
army work and cotton caterpillar.
Destruction by Insects.
When it is known that insect pests
and plant diseases cost the farmers
and fruit growers of the state S3O,
000 in 1912, the importance of exper
imentation in destroying these pests
will be better understood. Experimen
tal stations are maintained where the
experiments can be conducted under
the best conditions. Experiments on
insects and diseases that attack the
apple and peach are conducted in
Habersham county near Cornelia. Ex
periments on the mole cricket are
conducted on St. Simon's Island, near
Brunswick. Experiments on insects
ami diseases of the pecan tree are
conducted at DeWitt in the pecan
growing section
Results of this experimentation
have been the discovery and develop
ment of many vAlqfiblfi remedies far

Considering its limited appropria

ISAACK WRITES
Of the Three Churches—Jew
Gentile and Church of
God.
_ f
Rightly divide the Word and
notice the difference between
Jew], (Gentile and the Church of
God, as in Isaiah 44 5, you will
see the three churches —three
classes of people, as it is written :
“Give none offense to the Jews,
Gentiles, nor to the church of
God.”
Here wv see that neither Jew
nor Gentile is the imthortal
Church of God in the past. Two;
of these church s hat/e been man-<
ifestedi —the Jewish church un
til they rejected Christ, then i
they were cut off and the Gentile
brought in, as Paul said “Blind
ness happened in part unto Is
rael until the fulness of the Gen
tiles be come in.” —Romans 11-
25. And if they boasted against
the Jew th y should also lie cut
off. And they have boasted, and
it is the fullfillment of the Scrip
tures: Two parts shall be cut
off and die. and the third part
shall be left therein. Iti that day
Israel shall be third —Isaiah 19—
24.
Atnj. 1 Will refine them as sil
ver is refined and try them as
silver is refined and try them as
gold is tried, for he will have a
tried and willing people in the
day of his power. Both Jew and
Gentile fail to keep the com
nr ndm. nts of God and to have
th? faith of Jesus; therefore
they fall short of til 1 promise—
