William Randolph Hearst's In dependence party’s convention luvs put out its ticket and presented a platform, and its following is play ing that it has launched anew na tional yarty. Thomas Hisgen, of Massachusetts, is the candidate for president, and John Temple Graves, of th<‘ New York Amerian, is the candidate for vice-president. Wc do not know anything about Mr. Hisgen, and we don’t know anybody who does know anything of him. It was said in the news papers in advance of the convention that lfearst wanted him nominated for president, so there is nothing surprising in his nomination. John Temple Graves is a different prop osition. He is known wl er ver sweet Words are crooned. He was horn in South Carolina; he was raised in Georgia and he lives now in New York, but he belongs to humanity. He is at once the com fort and despiar of the poet, the singer ami the painter. He has been called a “word weaver,” and he has been known to.lull the mock ing bird to rest and to make the lily blush with envy. In short, John Temple is the goods. Why he should he thought of for vice-presi dene we can not imagine, hut he ought to be poet laureate to the Aiherican etogle by unanimous vote, andthe idea of making him the tail to a Hearst ticket is ridiculous. Mr. Hisgen will have to anchor himself, else some bright summer day John Temple will soar into'the empyrean and carry off the presidential Can didate into a rarified atmosphere in which he can not live. —Charleston Post.
