ATIEMPTED ROBBERY. Tour Plot to Murder Mrs. J. E. J. Perkins and Set fire to Premises. When Mrs. .1. E. J. Perkins, an aged widow woman living about four miles from Winder, in Jackson county, entered her home early Saturday evening she was attacked by a negro boy who had secreted himself behind a door. The negro had choked Mrs. Per kins almost into insensibility when the commotion attracted the atten tion of her grandson, who was seated by the fire in an adjoining room taking a nap. In his efforts to hasten to the rescue the grandson ran over a chair and created a great racket. The presence of others in the house was a surprise to the negro, and he loosened his grip on Mrs, Perkin’s throat and made his escape. The grandson alarmed the neigh borhood and a searching party was soon organized which rounded up some eight or ten negroes. At the commitment ofVred Hall, a negro boy about 19 years of age, before Justice -J. M. Ilaynie, the boy admitted his guilt, and implicated throe other negroes, WiU Perkins, an old and trusted servant of the family, and Arthur and Luther Hayes, f Hall said the old Perkins negro had planned the robbery of Mrs. Perkins and a little store near the j house; that the Hayes negroes w< re I stationed at tJie lot to catch Mrs. Perkins in ease she ran out of the | house, the old negro was dressed in women’s clothing and stationed by | a tree in front of the residence, 1 while Hall was commissioned to go ! into the hoyse and attack Mrs. Perkins. 'Flie plan was to kill Mrs. Per kins and set fire to the house if. necessary to complete [the robbery. Mrs. Perkins has been subject to fainting spells lor several years. During one of these spells not long ago two negro women on the plan tation were called upon to assist in removing her clothing and placing her in b and. When they did so they’ noticed that Mrs. Perkins wore a quite a quantity i of money attached to a belt around her waist. The fact became gen erally known among the negroes of the community, and it was to secure this money that the plot was planned.
