We went over to Jefferson Satur day and found that some of our good friends there are imbued with the idea that we are inclined to knock. We wish to set ourselves right, so here arid now rise to declare that the Avay people talk about that town is a shame. Why, there were fellows on the streets over there who told us there was not a man in town who knew how many cases of smallpox had been there; that to their certain knowledge there had been at least 45 to 60 cases; that a family of eight just picked up and moved while it was full of smallpox; that there are seven cases of the disease now in the negro quarters; that the mill owners had run the fumigator out of factory town, telling him they would attend to all the small pox in that section; that a white map and a negro were sent out of thfc'county jail to the road gang, and when they went to put the snackles on them they w-ere all broke out with smallpox and are now lying under a tent by the roadside near Commerce; that all quarantine meant was to say to the inhabitants, “If you got smallpox, stay at home;” that a man was building a house and folks told him, “Don’t you let old man Ram sey come about you any more, ’cause one o’ his boys broke out to day” (Friday). We never saw any smallpox, and, of course, don’t know whether there By Spending Less Than They Make. Quite a large crowd attended preaching at this place. Sunday; Rev. J. R. Huff preached an inter esting sermon. Rev. J. R Huff and C. L. Bunn broke dirt for the Baptist church in Russell Thursday, March 4th. Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Bunn made a business trip to Bethlehem Satur day afternoon. Miss Jessie Gordon, of New Chapel, attended preaching here Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Fred C'ox, of New Timothy, visited the former’s par ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Cox, Sun day. Mr. John Hinesley, of Corinth, attended services at this place Sun day night, also Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Fuller. Mrs. Florence Bell, who has been sick several days, is no better at this writing. Miss Irene Tolbert visited Misses Callie, Isabel and Nealie Wright Saturday night and Sunday. Mrs. C. G. Haralson and Mrs. J. K. G. Fuller visited Mrs. T. Z. Wright Monday afternoon. Miss Della Smith spent Saturday night and Sunday with home-folks. Misses Callie, Isabel and Nealie Wright, of this place, visited Mr. and Mrs- T. R. Wright, of Central, Tuesday. Rev. J. R. Huff and wife visited Mr. and Mrs. James Bell Sunday afternoon. PARADISE. Mr. and Mrs. Willie Patton spent : Sunday here, the guests of Mrs. R. E. Clack* I j Mrs T. A. Smith and daughters, sse visited Jot' Hammond, ner Statham', Supday. Mr. Hammond was shot recently. 'They report that he is improving. Mr. and Mrs. Onia McDonald, of Oglethorpe county, is visiting the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. G. M. Chandler. Miss Corine Wall spent Sunday with Misses Emmie West and Pearl Eley. Mr. and Mrs. Marshal Howing ton, of Pentecost, spent Saturday night and Sunday with J. D. Wall and family. The singing at Rev. J. P. Eley’s j Sunday night was enjoyed by all. Mrs. Ora McElhannon and chil dren were the week-end guests of Jack McElhannon and family. JEFFERSON. An educatioal rally was held at the courthouse on last Tuesday night to discuss the public school situation of Jefferson. A number of the citizens made speeches to a large audience. It is hoped that the matter will soon l>e adjusted and the school again assume her just place among the great educational institutions of the state. Protracted servioes are being held at the Methodist church. Rey. G. I). Stone is being assisted by the consecrated Christian singer, Mr. John Hendrix. Mr. Hoyt Archer, of Athens, is spending a few days in Jefferson with his friends. Mrs. 8. J. Nix and Mrs. T. W. Webb are visiting the Misses Nichols, hear Athens.
