Finally we had Doan’s Kidney Pills brought to our attention and getting a box at Turner’s Pharmacy, we began giving them to her. Since the day of reconstruction the South has been continually in a state of sociological and economic vivisection. Almost invariably every 1 ankling ologist of one kind or an other has broken out of college and struck the frail to the South to study this or that“condition.” The good and patient people of the South have been exposed as a sort of an thropological clinic for the high brows to poke, lasp and irritate generally. Not along ago the scientists emerged from the South bearing triumphantly" the unlovely twins, pellagra and the hookworm. For a matter of centuries the American people got along very well without knowing anything about either pellagra or the hookworm. All at once the scientists have dis covered that both these diseases are fearful menaces to the South, and magazine writers have had urofit able frenzies which have frightened quite a number of good Deople. An international conference was called at Columbia, S. C., to study the dread pellagra- This conference has now adjourned, with a net profit of many learned papers from many learned men and mighty little in formation about pellagra. Actuated by an admirable feeling of humanity, John D. Rockefeller has set aside $1,000,000 to fight | the hookworm. The dread phantom !of this awful disease was exhibited Ito the philanthropist’s vision and the million was forthcoming. Now i it appears that Mr. Rockefeller was presented with a citron. The cen sus bulletin* on the subject just issued has failed to justify all this fright. It shows that even if all the deaths from anemia were caused by the hookworm —which is not the | case —then it is one of the most ■ harmless diseases known. The bulletin shows that in a given period there were 2,152 deaths from ane mia. In the same period there were 33,465 persons killed by cancer, 61,251 by pneumonia, 43,83$ by Brigh’t disease, 32,467 by apoplexy and 78,289 by consumption. Thus the terrible hookworm holds about the same ratio to other fatal diseases as whooping cough. Pellagra, which is now ravaging the South, and which has cieated so much consternation among the scientists, has been responsible for fewer than twenty-three deaths. As the total number of cases of pellagra is not given, it is impos sible to estimate the death ratio, but it is probably about the same as the death rate from ulcerated teeth. Pellagra, declare the wise ones, is caused by eating must corn. How the pioneers of the West ever escap ed annihilation is a miracle. For years the cheif diet of our people was corn —musty, stale, good and bad, raw and cooked. But we didn’t have any pidlagra, or if we had we didn’t known it, and we were not bothered by the scientists. —Kansas City Journal. If We Could See Vou Face To Face. If we could see you face to face, we could prove to you beyond the shadow of a doubt the advantages of the famous Byrne Practical Book keeping, Business Training, and Simplified Shorthand; we could show you clearly how it is that we can turn out a better stenographer or bookkeeper and do it in three months loss time than when we used to teach the systems that are now being used in other schools. This saving of three months’ time means much to the prospective student; at a conservative SSO per month, the three months time would amount to $l5O, three months hoard at sl2 would amount to SBS, or a total saving of SIBO, to say nothing of the fact that the student of our school gets three months pratical experience, while the students of the other schools is just finishing his course and lias no experience. We have hundreds of graduates holding the very l>est positions to be found in our largest cities. We have more calls for our graduates of l>ookkeeping and short hand than we are able to supply. You may enter with us at anytime; our work is practically all indi vidual instruction. Thorough pre paratory work in English branches is given free with all our courses. Write for catalog; make your arrangements to enter at once, so that we may soon have the pleasure of placing you in a good position. Address Athens Business College, Athens, Ga.
