Animals He Had Met.
Little Harry was visiting in the
country and while there l>ecamevery
much attached to his cousin’s pet
dog. “Haven’t you any animals at
home?” “Oh, yes,” replied the
little fellow.”\Ve have roaches and
Hies.’’—Chicago News.
TYRO.
When Oliver Cromwell, the pre
tender and reformer of England's
polities, sat for his picture before a
noted artist, said, ‘‘Paint me as 1
am,” he wanted the conspicuous
mole or wart to l>e placed where it
belonged, otherwise he would not
have a true copy.
Brother, are you as true? Would
the politician of today gladly have
hi? every act placed before the eyes
of the public—that is, the acts that
belong toor concern the public?
You have your books balanced,
‘tis true, but are they not like some
|stock companies—more water than
cash assets. Any good bookkeeper
can balance a hook, but very few
can furnish the men cash.
Take the rows in Atlanta over
water works, electric lights, paving
of streets, sidewalks, etc. The
books may show one kind of work
while the work itself shows up en
trely different.
Come nearer home, and take the
best wound-up town in Georgia —
Winder. Look at her streets —
about wide enough for two wagons
to pass. An automobile or a scared
team has to jam up against shade
trees and trespass on yards and
sidewalks. Winder’s “city dads’’
are afraid to widen them, are they
not? Is the space too costly? Or
have you no one to get a move on
and set the nail to rolling: and not
only that, but knock out some
crooks?
One good move would lx* to make
a street and road from or near the
Methodist church in Winder to John
Hill’s, where the Mulberry road
leaves the Winder and Jefferson
road, thus cutting the distance to
Jefferson at least a quarter of a
mile. Do you care to he painted as
you are? Speak out on this njw
way. To you who own land it will
be to your betterment. This will
l>e the National Highway, and your
property will advance beyond yojur
most sanguine hopes. If you wish
to keep up with the van, get ;to
thinking and acting. If not, he a
drone —an old timer, an ox driver
with a snail’s gate —and die for the
want of action to be useful. Muscle
and mind must l>e kept busy to be
successful. You must speedily
grasp the opportunities as they pre
sent themselves.
The reason why so many of us
aie poor is we grab at what appears
to he an opportunity —for instance,
10-cent cotton —and lose. Be sure
and take no stock in games of
cnance, but real solid opportunities,
such as improving lands, houses,
roads and streets. Do those things
now.
Mr. Blank, who is seeking a
home, passes a neat, well-kept farm ,
good roads, nice school house near
by, stops at once; the price is not
a consideration; he wants the place
and will have it.
Would you have Winder painted
as she should be? Would you have
people come to stay? If so, quit
painting her as she is, make anew
map, broaden and straighten your
streets, grade down the hills and fill
in the low places, then paint her as
she should be —the best wound-up
town in Georgia and ready for run
ning.
The people of Winder are social,
clever, genial, industrious and per
severing along most lines. Now,
look well to your laurels on this
question of improvement of your
thoroughfares, for in this there is
more than l can tell or you can
imagine. The jewels upon which
your balance wheel rests are the
finest diamonds; the wheel was
modeled oy the best of workmen;
the spring that keeps Winder in
running shape is as true as steel —
just a little narrowness and a few
crooks in her ways. Correct these,
and her gait cannot be beaten by
any town. .Tyrant.
