Baptist State Convention
In Atlanta Last Week
The 99th annual State conven
tion. of Georgia Baptists met in
Atlanta at the Baptist Tabernacle
last week. Dr. J. IX Mell, of Ath
ens, was ejected president; JDr. B.
I>. Ragsdale of Macon, was made
secrets ry.
Dr. Arch free, State Mission
Seer of a tv, read the mission report
a psH of which follows;
“Georgia Baptists nnder God
have ascended to the mountain
top of sublime achievement. They
have bverComC the foothills of dif
ficulty. They have climbed stead
ily upward, in spite of every han
dicap, and now stand triumphant
on heights of victory, heights be
yond the brightest <1 reams of the
most sanguine a few years ago.
The great program and challeng
ing task of the Baptist 75 Million
Campaign fired the souls of our
Georgia Baptist folk and swept
them onward by the power of spir
itual enthusiasm to the glorious re
cord r< gistered in the great Vioto
rv-1 h:i\ e'in'the first month of this
Convention year. And, thus fired,
tlicv have all through the year
striven so faithfully and so self
sacrificingly as to make the record
of the past year the greatest in
their history.
Never in the history of our Bap
tist people was their courage more
strong, their vision rno'o bright,
their devotion deeper and their
faith truer than in the challenging
day of victory week lust December
The goal set was one-tenth of the
total of the Baptist 75-Million
Camp&ign, or $7,500,000.00. So
thorough was the organization of
our Georgia forces, so superb the
leadership of our worthy pastors
and othe lendos, men and women,
•<o devoted the responses of all of
our people, that when the full re
ports were received and the rec
ord made it was found that we had
pledged over $10,000,000.00 to the
greatest Kingdom program ever
projected by any denomination.
Flushed with the joy of that pre
liminary triumph most of our peo
ple began to set themselves serious
ly to the majorta.sk of making that
victory real by matching their
pledges with their payments and
thus it is with deepest satisfaction
we are enabled to report that Geor
gia Baptists have responded in roy
al fashion and have paid on their
pledges within the cyar a grand
total which exceeds by $222,521.94
their quota for the year and by
that much roaches on toward the
full redemption of their pledges.
This is a remarkable record w hen
we take into account the almost
State-wide devastation of the boll
weevil, the practical failure of the
peach crop, the well-nigh disas
trous depression of the cotton mar
ket and the prevailing unhertain-'
ty of these times fool' readjust
ment and reaction. Therefore, we
have the faith to believe that by
the nd of th tlve-year period the
full $10,000,000.00 pledged will be
paid. The total receipts for this
Convention year for all objects are
$1,774,399.74 and for strictly cam
paign causes, $1,722,521.94. A pos
itively thrilling record of more
than a million more than the total
record of last year—51,015,277.69
more than total receipts for 1919.
D. L. Spooner with his great
chorus choir had the song service
in charge which proved to Ik* an
inspiration at each service.
The Christian Index, the denom
inational paper, reports through
Kditor Louie L. Newton 25,500
subscribers and a glorious year’s
work in the matter of keeping pub
licity and Baptist kingdom affairs
before the people. It lias bee,*,
purchased the last year at a cost
of $40,000.00.

under the charge of I)r. B. S Rai

was turned over to the hoidlng
commission anil the trustees of the

bonds to the amount of 1% million
dollars and to complete tin* great
est hospital in the world.
! Dr. Rufus W Weaver told of
the triumphs of the closing year in
educational circles. He is chan
cellor of the great Mercer system
of schools. 2,319 students have
been enrolled this year.
It was an inspiring sight to have
the 100 ministerial students of
Mercer present, also a delight to
have the 80 misses from the Geor
gia Baptist Hospital and the quar
tette of girls from the Orphans
home who sang for us.
The next session goes to Savan
nah December 7-9, 1921. Rev. A.
3. Monrrief preaches the sermon
