Custom Common Among the Igorots
Is Declared to Be Undesirable
for Many Reasons.

Those who remember the article In

the hilling of dogs for food among the
Igorots, says Our Dumb Animals,
will be glad to know that It has
aroused sufficient Interest to cause
the Manila J>aily Bulletin to say, ac
cording to a clipping we have just re

“The office of the Department of the
Interior is constantly receiving from
persons in the United States, mostly
women, letters protesting against dog
eating in the mountain province
among the Igorots, it was declared by
Secretary Knlaw of the department.
All of them, lie said, urge that in ♦he
interests of civilization and better
and higher mode of living, a law
should lie passed by the Philippine
legislature prohibiting the sale and
the use of dogs ns food material.
“Aside from the fact that tfie act
of eating dogs is highly undesirable,
the letters state, it is very inhumane.
The Igorots, they state, like to eat
Jean dogs and that the more bony
they are, the more palatable they
tj ste to iiie Igorots. Consequently,
when a dog is bought In the dog mar

might lx* done in an indirect manner.”

Among Hie relics of the Pilgrims

It is a Damascus blade and presum

Pilgrim captain from someone whose
ancestors had brought it from the
Crusudes.
It hears several curious Inscriptions,
which waited until June, 1881, to be
translated. Then Prof. James liose
dale of Jerusalem went with a hand
of Arabs to America's most important
shrine and found that the carved
characters belonged to different dates
—some in Cufic and very old.
He was only able to translate one,
of a later period, in Arable. The
words given here show that Its spirit
was quite appropriate to the spirit of
the Pilgrims:
“With peace (loti ruled his Slaves.
And with the judgments of His arms
Ho troubled the Mighty of the
wicked.”

800 WOMEN NEEDED
BY SALVATION ARMY
Commander Evangeline Booth
Says War Relief Work
Must Be Extended.
Commander Evangeline Booth, lead
er of the Salvation Army In tlir Unit
ed States, lias been suddenly! called
npon to furnish 800 war
work women for France. The rVjuest
Is contained in a report Just received
by her from CoL William A. Barker
of the Salvationist forces, whom she
sent to France over a year ago to es
tablish hutment and generul war relief
work with the American troops.
“We will do all we can to fill this
demand,” said Commander Booth when
discussing the approaching United
War Work Campaign, “and the need
itself should impress the American
public all the more with the absolute
necessity for sustaining and enlarging
the war relief work of the seven or
ganizations, besides the noble Ited
Cross, now merged for a drive for
funds. Each is a vital cog in a vast
machine for human relief, and each is
Indispenslblo, serving its particular
elements in its own way.
“The Salvation Army was horn in
hardship, reared in privation and
trained to every phase of human mis
ery and how to cope with it. Perhaps
that accounts in some degree for the
success our work has attained and for
which we are thankful.
“We are of the common people, and
we toil on a practical basis. Wo learn
ed the lesson of how to do it in the
Boer war, when we stood at the side
of Britain's troops and weathered it
out to the end. We have been tried
by fire, and the mothers and fathers
of America, as in other countries, trust
the Salvation Army to do the thing
they would like to do for their men if
they but had t lie chance.
“With 1,210 trained workers at the
front, operating from 420 lints and
dugouts, the Salvation Army Is doing,
has done and will continue to do Its
best for the cause of humanity and
Liberty.”

SURVEY WORLD BY WIRELESS
Scheme to Be Tested in Determining
the Boundary 3etween South and
West Australia.
It Is proposed to utilize wireless
telegraphy in determining tlie exact
position of the boundary between
South and West Australia. Tlie bound
ary Is fixed by act of parliament us
the 129th degree of longtltude east
of Greenwich. The exact position of
the longtltude will be ascertained by
the use of time signals from a high
power wireless station situated at
some point betwen Greenwich observa
tory, In England, and Sydney, in Aus
tralia, the signals being received si
multaneously at both stations.
Most of the great observatories of
the world are now collaborating in a
redetermination of tlie longitudinal
division of the earth’s surface by
means of wireless time signals, and
this is one of the earliest uses of the
system to settle a disputed position.
Given favorable static conditions, it
Ims been found that signals from tlie
Lyons wireless station, in France, can
he received In Australia ns well as at
Greenwich, and signals from other sta
tions, more favorably situated, are also
being tested. Tlie co-operation of tlie
United States as well ns the British
government lias been invited. Tlie
scheme is the first step toward a com
prehensive determination of the whole
longitudinal survey of Australia,

Stropping Razor on the Hand.
It is claimed that the finest strop for
a razor is the fleshy part of one’s hand
below the little finger. If it is a safety
razor blade grasp it between the thumb
and first finger of the right, hand and
strike finger nail and blade at the
same time on the fleshy part of the left
hand. If you will do it slowly at first
the motion becomes automatic. A lit

SCHOOL DAYS

The natives of New Guinea are the
shortest lived people in the world,
which is attributed to their diet of

practice of drinkiDg sea water.

Belgians Teach Farming.
The Belgian government has hit
upon a novel scheme of teaching the
farmers of the country better methods
of farming, says Motor. The idea of
a school for farmers is not new, but
the idea of taking the school to the
fanner by means of a motor caravan
is certainly novel. The school build
ing consists of three units, one pow
ered with a gasoline motor; in short
a building section on a motor truck.
With this powered unit go two trail
ers and the three rolled into position
and joined together makes the com
modious and convenient classroom.
Cat Goes 800 Miles In Wheel.
A kitten crawled inside the rim of
a big flywheel' at the Great Northern
mills at Burlington, Neb., and fell
asleep. The mill pet was unnoticed
and the giant machinery was set in
motion. Tlie wheel whirred about
with the kitten inside for nine hours,
held to its perilous position by the
running of the wheel. The kitten was
still alive when the machinery was
stopped for the night It was esti
mated It had traveled 600 miles.
THE TKUTJT ABOUT THE
"JjJLUE .LAWS."
The “Blue Law’’ Bogey.
TWre wiU never be any “Blue
laws” in America. This country
IVs governed, on the whole, by rea
sonable and law-abiding men.
They believe that Sunday was not
meant to be a burden, but a delight
“The Sabbath was made for man,
and not man for the Sabbath. - ’
There is no danger of either the
Puritan or the Pharisee dictating
the Sunday laws of our land. It
is because it is a humanitarian law
that we are contending for it’s en
jforcement today. The law of na
ture and the law of God demands
that every man shall be given one
day in seven for rest, for worship,
for his home. And the fact is,
that through our selfishness al
most four million people are being
'deprived of that privilege, and are
'forced to work seven days a week.
This is the result, largely, of mak
ing Sunday a holiday. In Prus
sia, when Sabbath desecration be
jgan, and the people forsook the
'churches, soon the stores and fac-
tories began to remain open until
over 50 per cent of the workers
were reprived of their Sunday
rest. "When a man begins to cry
for this kind of freedom, it ends
in his being made a slave.
Who Should Work.
There is a happy medium in ev
erything. Constructed as the
world is today, it is necessary that
some few should work in order
that the multitude should rest.
But is there any reason why you
should not buy your gasoline on
Saturday, for your Sunday ride,
or get your 48-page Sunday paper
on Saturday night? Why not
cut down tlie number of Sunday
trains and give the railroad man
a chance? And if there is. to be
no business trnsacted on that day,
why should you force the postal
employees to work? It is the in-
excusable selfishness of Christian
people that causes these condi
tions. These laws are simply an
effort to get the majority of us to
obey the golden mile. It is not
to try to compel anybody to go to
church, but simply to give every
body a chance.
Not Blue But Golden Sunday
Some of us remember the old
fashioned Sunday that was not a
‘blue” but a golden day. On
tht day w e gained the inspiration
in the little church that has kept
us from being absolutely hopeless
and Godless. It was a day for
the best things, for the Ocst books,
for the family circle, for deeds of
love and mercy, for long walks
out in God’s great “out-of-doors.”
Does any sane man want his chil
dren to grow up in any other at
mosphere'? The American Sab
bath has been tl]£ foundation of
our liberties, and of all that is best
in our civilization. It is the cor
ner-stone of the old-fashioned
American home. Do you wonder
that w e are fighting for it with
desperate earnestness? It is be
cause we believe that if America
loses her Christian Sabbath, she is
doomed. “For whatsoever a na
tion soweth, that shall it also
Yeap.”
Duties of the Queen Bee.
It may he interesting to some peo
ple to learn that all the work in a bee
hive is done by female bees. The
drones, or males, live on the labors of
their more industrious female com
panions. Moreover, there is no such
thing as a king bee. The ruler of the
hive is the queen, but she is a ruler
in name only, being guarded and pro
tected by the bees simply because the
colony would become extinct If she did
not lay ggs at a prodigious rate. It
Is not unusual for a good queen to pro
duce her own weight in eggs in n
single day, and she keeps this up for
•veeks at a time.

Steam Against Sails.
Modern naval development may bts
said to have begun with the rapid in
crease in the size of ships which took
place at the close of the fifteenth eeu
tury; and mediaeval history finally
closed with the battle of Lepanto Id
1571, the last great ncfioa lu which
rowing galleys played an important
purt. From this time the
polled man-of-war was gradually Im
proved untU early i a the nineteenth

to steam.
