B. Fletcher able to be out after a severe spell of sickness. Wo are also gratified tochronicle the convalescing of liis son, Johnnie Fletcher, who has been, verry low with fever. ■We learn the marshal slipped upon Warren Waters and some others, de sjndantß of ham, engaged in a “little game” of cards, in the livery stable the other day, whereupon the mayor step ped in and took the “pot” for town treasury—but the Grand Jury. Ig Justices of the Peace make a dead Spre thing of court cost in this section. We heard of one the other day, who hound a negro over to await his trial at the Superior Court, and then levied on his mule for the Justice court cost. ■We had the pleasure of forming the SCquaintence of Col. Catchins, of Ma- C9ll, Ga., He bears the reputation of a promising young lawyer, and we are pleased to learn that he contemplates making Jackson his home. J The sociable at the Benton House, Monday night of last week, was an en joy able occasion with the young folks. Quite a crowd of young people were pr esent, as well married. Johnny- Brown, Many Many Stars, and The |pog Drover, were among the plays participated in. are glad to know that Dickie ■Betwc-li, has decided not to go to Flor ida He is one of Jackson's nioddle young men, and has many friends who would regret to see him leave. We til ought when it come to the test, that (f -'ould beslowtotear himself away precious ties that binds him Ot-rc, for other and strange lands of E. L. Henderson has opened a First class Photograph Gallery at the Bsn* ton House, where he is prepared to make any kind of Pictures you may want. Those wishing good pictures of themselves or friends, must call soon as his stay will be short. We have been reliably informed that Issaac Ransom, of Covington, has been arrested for attempting to shoot Dr- Pitts, of that place in his store. Ran some was committed to jail in defaltof bail. We learn the difficulty grew out of some claims Ransom held for collec tion as bailiff, for Pitts, on which he had made some collection and failed to turn over the money. We are sorry that A. Me. Watkins & Son, have concluded to retire from the merehantile business. Mr. Bennie Watkins is a cleaver, jolly, good busi ness fellow, and we wish him abundant success any bttssiness undertaking. He prefers to follow the honorable and most independant of all callings, farming, the bone and sinuc of the land. Since writing the above we are pleased to learn that tiny have con cluded to continue doing buisuess at their old stand. TO BAFFLE. A FINE SEWING MACHINE. Wafrentoil, with Jill the latest improvements and attach ments. Call at A. Me. Watkins & Son’s, and take a chance for this valuable and useful machine. i4dectf y Dr. Mays is probably the most com fortably situated of any farmer in the county. Ho has a beautiful planta tion and residence near Worth ville. He has also recently purchased several hundred acres of land, upon which he is erecting comfortable tenant houses. This is certainly the propper course to persue for a suci essful farmer and his example is worthy of emulation. A farmer who provides tidy, comfartahle quarters on his plantation, can always control that class of labor which is pre ferable to all others. A negro secreted himself under the counter at A, Ale. Watkins & Son’s last Saturday night week, and was dis covered by Mr. Tobe Ham, a clerk, who had closed the store and stepped out in town and on his returned, dis covered the money drawer open, and knowing that he left it closed, suspi cioncd that something was wrong and took a lamp that was left lighted, went behind the counter and seeing an old pair of shoes on the floor, looked under the counter and found the thief, lie collared the colored gent and led him out for the purpose of delivering him to the marshal and when they reached the sidewalk the negro made a success ful effort and escaped after having a tussel with Mr. Ham and biting his hand. The darky slid out of his coat, leaving it with Mr. Ham who held him by the uoat collar, and “struck the grit’ at a lively pace. Some small change was found in the daiTic’s coat pocket, and on the floor. It is not known whether lie carried oil anv or not. Wc did not learn the darkies name, but a clue to bis identity, is sufficient to war rant the propper papers being issued for bis arrest. Mr. Ham, though “nig ger thief bit” the wound is not howev er serious. FOR SALE. We have, at this office a fine SPAY ING MACHINE, with all the latest improvements and attachments, which we will sell cheap and give a written guarantee from the company for five years. Come and see it, and Buy it lor your wife or daughter as a ehristmas gift. 14dectf Items Prom Totva lisyn. Warrants were issued against three of our colored friends for riotous con duct, while passing along the public road, leading out from Mr. Smith’s. They gave themselves up for trial. One of them says lie is guilty and is willing to slider the penalty. He was bonnd over and the other two liberated. Old Santaclause made his headquar ters at Doughtry’s store during Christ mas and made it quite lively for the children. The colored people immus ed themselves climbing greased poles at the top of which presents were plac ed for all who reached them. Mr. Boen Hark ness’ little girl had her arm dislocated one day week before last. It received prompt attention and she din’t know, in a few hours, that it had been hurt. We learn that Franklin" Mangham shot the top off one of his lingers with a pistol. I.ucky that it was’nt his head. Mrs. Samuel Ridgeway gave one of her annual dinings to some of her many friends during Christmas. The biggest party oftlie season was given by Miss A. Woodward, Wednes day night, at her brother's, I’of. Woorl iward. All behaved exceedingly well j considering the large crowd. Mr. Win. New ton who resides a few miles from Jackson, says a negro en tered his corn crib on Saturday of last week, and borrowed, without his con ge nt and filled it with corn. The old council was re-elected with the exceptions of Byars in the place of McMichael. “By thy good works, ye shall know them.’ There is much to he clone anoth er year, and we hope soon to see the council commence to straighten things out. Notes From Mj’s Disiric'. feY D. J. T. A little daughter of Mr. Heath’s died Dec., 24th last. Christmas was very dull indeed. A party of hunters claimed to have kill ed fifty mbits, beside birds and squir rels, in one day. Farm hands are in demand in this community. Mr. John Benton and John T. Bear den and families have recently moved to Sand Mountain. About 2iX) pounds of meat was stol en from Rev. J. 11. Cooper’s smoke house one night during Christinas. No clue to the thief. A suspicious mulatto was arrested here several days ago and lodged in the Jackson jail, on the charge of horse stealing. A line horse was found in his possession and alter making sever al contradictory statements concern ing it, the authorities thought best to lock him up till further developments. The owner of the horse, a railroad man, lias claimed him. The most serious accident of Christ mas, happened to tho little son of Mr, Baity Carmichael. A party of little boys were out rabbit hunting and by some mishap a whole load of birdshot were blown into him from head to foot. We are glad to state however that he is not seriously hurt, and will soon re cover. \ great many are laboring under a mistake.
