C. 28declm —**-'* i 8 quite prevalant in Jackson at this time. Capt. Loyd saya the roads between this place and Covington are almost impassible for loaded teams. It is said some 10 or 15 now dwel lings are soon to be erected in Jackson, by Col. McKibben and others. Dr. Bryans ts said to be one of the finest young pbyeicians in this sec tions. To say the least, he is as clever as almost anybody. Our popular merchant, M. L. Duka, is closing out his stock of dry goods at cost and will deal in groceries exclu sively. Reet McMichal has moved into his new residence and Mr. G. W. Man’s family is living where Reet formerly resided. A special mail service has been es tablished to Ella, Jasper county, lrom Smith’s mills. Col. McKiben’s new store house is about completed and will be occupied by -‘dose clever sheii Is," Messrs Car michael & McMichael. Mr. Barfield spent several days in Jones county last week. The nearest route for him is via Forsyth and Ma con; although it is an oposito direction from Jones county the “attractions' a’ong the route makes it much the best way “in bad weather.” Col. Wright went over to Forsyth last week, we did not exactly learn what for, and perhaps it is none of our business, but we think slu came back with him. Rev. Mr. Glenn, is as energetic as the days are long. lie can be seen from early morn untiil dewy eve busi ly engaged in fixing and putting things to rights around the parsonage. Mr. Wm. R. Weaver informs us that he is perfecting arrangements to erect a fine merchants mill, on the right-of-way of the railroad near Mr. McCord’s residence. We learn that Col. McKibben, one of our most enteprising citizens, will have erected, several new dwelings to rent. lie won’t more than comeplete them before occupants will be ready for them, and as many more as can be built in the next twelvemonths. We learn a gentleman from McDon ough, by the name of Cloud, will put in operation at this place, a machine for the purpose of making brick by a new process. Mr. Jones and another gentleman from Milner, were here last week, look ing for a place to locate a shop for the purpose of putting in a plaining machine and other machinery. We did not learn with what success they met. E. L. Henderson has opened a first class Photograph Gallery at '.he Ben ton House, where he is prepared to make any kind of Pictures you may want. Those wishing good pictures of themselves or friends, must call soon as my stay will be short. janll The mail route from Jackson to Griffin has had no regular carrier this year. Mr. W. I. Shields is carrying the mail until deffinite arrangements are made. The contractors could not se cure the services of a more resnonsible gentleman than Mr. Shields. If you would not be the means of making a post master say ugly words, always place the postage stamp on the upper righthand corner of an envelope, propper place for it. Marcellos Woodward, col, informs us 'that-hewent to Monroe county the other day, where he stole his girl and was married. Marcellus seems to be a worthy boy and we wish him succees. Dont fail to read the advertisement of Roberts, Roberts & Goolsby, in this issue. Mr. J. M. Franklin, of this county, says the Constitution, traced his fine iron-gray horse to Atlanta, which was "stolen from him a few days ago. A de scription of the thief was given the po lice, but up to a late hour Friday night they were unable to locate him. Married at the residence of tie brides father, Mr. Barnes, Mr. D B. BLACKA/ORE. LOOK OUT. Parties indebted to me must come forward and settle, or renew their pa pers. If they do neither, they will find their papers in the hands of the officer of the law. Jan., 18th, 1882. 2t M. V. McKIBBEN. , \Vc are pleased to learn that Mr. D. B. Bivins, of Hampton, has made sat isfactory arrangements with his credit ors, and is continuing his business. He is a cleaver and honorable gentleman and we wish him success and a peedy recovery from his financial embarrass ments. Mr. Laspeyere informs us that he has been employed to finish blasting the rock cut, for Mr. Irwin. It will not take him long to blow it out with dynamite and his electric battery. Mr. Irwin has received notice to finish his contract at the earliest moment pos sible, as every effort is being made to complete the Extention as speedily as pOaolV/lv. Owing to the indispositio of Judge Hendrick, which fact we regret to chronicle, the criminal docket of the County Court was not fully disposed of at the recent session. The Jail was relieved of its only inmate, Henry Jes ter, who goes up for CO days in default of a fine of S2O and cost, for stealing $lO. Considerable amount of civil bus iness was disposed of. We would like to get a square look in the face, at the trustees of the Academy. We want to see what kind of material they are made of. We flout know who they are, but we do know they ars neglecting their duty as trustees, to allow the Academy to stand open and unprotected to the weather, negroes, tramps, goats, hogs &o. FOR SALE. We have, at. this office a fine SEW ING MACHINE, with all the latest improvements and attachments, which we will sell cheap and give a written guarantee from the company for five years. Come and see it, and buy it for your wife or daughter as a Christmas gift. lldectf A burglar made two unsuccessful at tempts at breaking nto Mr. Land’s residence, on last Sunday night. The first time he was frightened off by Mrs. Land, who fired off a pistol through the window. The second attempt was made trying to raise the diningroom window, the noise of which awoke Mrs. Land, who gave the alarm by scream ing which frightened the thief and brought several of our citizens upon the scone. Mr. Land, who, only a few days ago, had moved his familyji'rom Bullard, Ga., was absent at the time, on husiness. We admire Mrs. Land’s pluck. When our marshal tapped on the front door, she made him give the countersigh, and when the servant opened the door, she was standing at a respectable distance in the hall with a revolver in position, known in military tactics, as “make ready.” The marshal being a stranger to her, taking off his hat, appeared as polite as a dancing master. We advise burglars not to go there to steal. The Sheriff did not "stab” Indian Springs so fatally as has been said, af ter all. We have been informed by one of the best citizens of the place, that the people paid little or no atten tion to fact that the Sheriff’s sales had been changed to the paper published at the county site, and, as is said by all we have heard mention the matter, to be the propper place. And why should they ? The News is as much, if not more interested in the welfare of the good people of Indian Springs, as any paper, as there is none published there. • We believe Indian Spring has bright prospects ahead and some day, will rank with the most popular summer roeorts of the South, and will be the means of making Butts county famous in that respect. We wish her people well, and will assist them in making their inducements and many advantages knowd to the public. The News will harbor no enmity against any one or aid in bringing about sectional feelings among our people, baton the other hand, will endeavor to harmonize them. The Grand Jury in ihe Ur> red States Court at Alexandria have de- I dined to find an indictment in the Carmichael case, in which a postal was placed in the mails at Loudoun county (V’a ) pest-office, asking Sen ator Vance tor a copy nt his speech aoaii st that “d—d dog Mahnm-, ’ ami the sender alter ward- held tor a h* ar * fog on the charge of sending souri il~ bus matter through the mails. A rather strange proceedings on our streets Monday evening, created some little curiosity among the spectators that witnessed the maneuverings. A Mr. Terry of McDonough,Ga., in com pany with a Mr. Simmons, came in town with a warrant for Joe Hughs, who had been here for several days. He waS arrested by the marshal of Jackson, hut upon what charge, we did not learn, but it is thought he is connected with the crime recently committed in Rome, for which $o(X). reward is offered for the perpetrater. Hughs disclaimed being guilty of any thing to aurthoriee bis arrest. Sim mons who has been living at McDon ough but a short time, having bought Terry’s bar room about three months ago, is acquanted with Hughs, and both are from Cobb county and know a great many people in Rome. Terry and Simmons had about as much whis key aboad, when they arrived, as they could well manage, and after consider able talking between them, Terry drew from his pocket a printed description of the man wanted by the marshal of Rome, upon which lie arrested Sim mons the man who came with him to assist in the arrest of Hughs. Hughs seemed to be uneasy while Simmons, in rather a witty and unconcerned manner, said he was use to it and at first, did’nt appear to care, but finally appeared to grow quite wrathy at be ing arrested. It was right amusing to see the drunken trio; you could hardly decide which Was which. But Mr. Ter ry was satisfied enough to hire another horse and buggy and gave Cook Mc- Cord $25. to assist him in carrying the parties to McDonough, for which place they left about dark. It is not thought by our marshal, that the descriptions suit either of the parties, fully, but is satisfied they are guilty of some crime.
