Of Mr. James Maddox, surveyed the
town last Week and located the corners
of the square, the streets and the width.
The four main streets incircleing the
square, were made 06 feet wide, all oth
ers 40 ft. wide. This is a move in the
right direction, looking to a uniform
arrangement of things before two many
buildings are erected.
What, at first, appeared to be a seri
ous difficulty, occurred between one
Of tmr citizens and a citizen of the coun,
ty on last Friday, which fortunately
however, resulted in nothing more than
some very harsh language, and the
drawing of a revolver by one of the
party. The marshal interfered and an
investigation had before the mayor.
The rustieun was fined $5, and the oth
er party hound over to await the action
of the Grand Jury. Keep cool, gentle
man, rather early for Spring fights.
Mr. E. P. Catchingß has returned
from a visit to Macon. He reports
tracklaying on the Extension progress
ing finely. In conversation with the
boss-man, he was informed that they
expected to reach Jackson in 30 days,
if nothing happens to retard their pro
gress. There is only a mile or such a
blat ter of grading to finish, on which
they haVo consentratdd their forces,
and will complete it so as not to inter
fere with tracklaying, which is being
done at a rate of from one mile to a
mile and a liaif per day.
A Union SaUbath School was organ
ized at the Baptist church on last Sun
day evening. Col. M. V. McKibben
was elected Superintendent, and Dr.
W. L. Carmichael, assistent Superin
tendent. Capt. L. D Watson was
elected Secretary, and Mr. Jimmie
Bankston, Libarian. Aoout Go names
were enrolled and with a corpse of
enflnential and enterprising leaders
the school promises to be an interest
ing one. The community should lend
a hearty co-operation and crown it
with success.
We are pleased to learn that Judge J.
W. jjarkness is recovering from a se
vere hurt sustained by falling out of
his buggy, on last Wednesday. He
had returned from Griffin in anew
buggy lie had just purchased, and as
he was driving out to his residence late
in the afternoon, his horse shied to
one side of the road precipitating him
from the buggy and his jaw struck the
tie cutting an uggly gash, and ii
thought by .he attending physician to
he broken. He otherwise sustained
some slight bruises on the head and
shoulder by falling on the ground.
This is bad on tbe Judge in his old age,
and we are glad to know that his injur
ies are less serious than at first thought
to be.
We are pleased to see our Coody’s
District correspondent to the front
again. We assure our correspondents
that their contributions are apprecia
ted. We tender space in our columns
to Indian Springs if any of her thriv
ing citizens feel disposed to give the
local news of that popular village and
make known to the outer world, her
inducements and many advantages.
As well as making it an interesting
feature in the News, it would be of
some benefit to the town. We hope
some of her enterprising citizens will
represent Indian Springs and her in
terests in the columns of the News.

Macon, Ga., Feb., 6th; ISS2.
Ed. Jacksok News. Dear Sir: Hav
ing occasion to visit the city of Macon,
and thinking some of the actings and
doings of t,he good people of the Cen
tral City would he interesting, I take
the liberty of addressing you. Macon
is on a big boom and no mistake. Her
streets are crowded with vehicles o f ev
ery description, while the sidowullcs
are thronged With busy people of ev
ery class and occupation, prominent j
among whom are the farmers, who are
busily engaged making arrangbme nts
for the year. In conversation with
some of them I was glad to learn tb at
a larger per cent of grain would be plan
ted this year, than ever before. One
old farmer said that he was “afraid to
try and learn toeat cotton, for it killed
hogs where he came from.” Every
train that comes into orgoes out of the:
city is literally loaded with passengers,
most of vvhootn are country merchants,
coming to buy of the large wholesale
merchants of this place. They say they
can buy goods cheaper here than any
where else In the South. The ly in of
Macon, at present, is the new railroad.
Everybody seems in love with it, and.
at all times of the day you can see
crowds of people prominadirig the track,
or standing ni groups admiring the
beautiful scenery, for the view from the
road is indeed beautiful. The road
winds along the very brink of the river,
and in some places the embankment
juts fairly into the Stream. The most
beautiful view is obtained while pass
ing through the cemetery at the point
known as Lover’s Leap, there the road
makes a bold curve and all the beau
ties of the cemetery and river flash
upon the eye. It look? more like a
beautiful pleasure ground than any
thing I can compare it to. The white
monuments peeping through the trees
look like fine pieces of sculpture.
Bond’s monument towers immediately 1
over the road and presents a most im
posing appearance. The track has
been laid foreleven miles and lloltsville
the first station, has been reached.
The recent rise in the river did a little
damage to the road, hut not enough to :
cause delay in the work. The con
struction gangs “work every day and
Sunday too” and lay a mile and a half
of track per day. They would reach
Jackson in about thirty days if the
grading was all done. There is about
a mile on Renfroe’s contract that has
not been completed. They have con
centrated the forces however and will
soon push it through.
I hear more about Jackson while
here, than Ido when at home. Ev
erybody speaks of Jackson, as the town
on the extension. Several leadingbus
iness men asking me about the price of
land in and around Jackson, said that
as soon as the road was completed
thought of building summer homes
there as they thought it would be the
most desirable point on the road. I
never beard a man speak of any other
point on the road.
The subscription for the Academy of
Music goes bravely on, and Macon bids
fair to have one of the finest edifices of
the kind in the South.
Th large house occupied by Nnss
haum & Dannanimry was sold last
Tuesday for $-10,000. Several other pie
ces of property was sold and brought
correspondingly large figures. When
property sells high it is ft sure sign of
prosperity.
There is lots more I could write if I
had the time, or you the patience to
read, so for fear of exhausting that pa
tience, I’ll close.
Your, &c.,
E. P. C.

in riding around over the country,
we noticed a lively thrift among our
farmers. Notwithstanding the almost
failure in a crop last year, they seem to
have started out with renewed energy
this Spring. Fences have been repair
ed, waste lands have been taken in,
houses renovated, and in several in
stances new and commodious harnes
have been built. There seems to he a
mania for swamp land. Many acres
of rich branch bottoms that have been
almost a nuisance and trouble, will
he taken up and cultivated this year.
