News : According to promise, I write yon a few fines from our baily wick. We have had the stock law ill force some three months ; it Is all we expected of it. there has been, to my knowledge, no litigation arising from its adoption. A number of our neigh bors who were opposed to it and voted against it, are well satisfied and say that should a vote be taken to repeal the law they would vote for it remain as it now is. The fences are being re moved from the roadside throughout the county, turning out many planta tions that are being plowed and culti vated to the roads edge. By so doing, we the renters, save from 3 to 5 acres in every 25 or 30 acres, that use to be occupied with fences —thus we renters are benefitted under the law. We have a good law and would like to divide with Butts. Our farmers are planting corn now in a hurry, and'from what we learn, there is a third more being planted in Henry county this year than last. Small grain is looking fine. S. M. Henry says the stock law is the best thing he ever saw—ditches were cut along the roads without the road hands having it to do. However, we might talk to our friends In Butts about the advantages and benefits we have already derived from this law, and ’twould be like the old addage, “convince a man against his will and lie is of the same opinion still. Wright, who was on a pro fessional visit, and who, by-the-way, is a rising young lawyer and enjoys a good practice. He’s got that "git up and git” about him, that make men great, and conducts business intrusted to his care in a manner and expedian cv, that gains the confidence of those who deal with him. He is a jolly good fellow to take atrip with, and “done you forgot ’em.” We formed some pleasent acquaint ences in Forsyth, and hope our vieit will prove to be a profitable one, ns we have the promise of some advertise ments from some of her enterprising business men. Forsyth is a better mar ket for some branches of business, for our people, and no better medium than the News can be found, through which to make theiradvantages known to the people of tliis section. The News has attained a circulation equal ifnot great er than any paper ever published in the county, and that, too, among a class of customers to be sought for by mer chants and manufacturers. The Sheriff of Jackson county ami possco, arrested a Mr. l’ippinger, near ’lndian Springs, Tbuvsdoy night, for the murder ofa man by thenanie of Strange of Jadksdn'couYity, some six or seven 'yeaTs ago, from which place he escap ed jail, running away and leaving a wile and several children. He had a a wife and two children in this county. When arrested by the sheriff he at tempted an escape, anti was shot at without effect, when the sheriff hol lowed, “look out boys, he’s coming.” Peppinger said he wns’nl afraid to take his chain os before one £nn, but when he heaTd thetfheriff give the alarm he condffided'that he was surrounded, and running upon Strange in the garden, brother of the murdered man, who he sa'id would certainly kill him, he con cluded that he had better stop. Pippinger, (not his right name) ac knowledged hisgftilt, and told all about his ups-and-downs since lie has been at large. Hecscaped jail with the no torious Kelly boys, of Newton county, and told about the Kellys planning to break jail and his putting their plans into execution. He talked freely o* their trials and how they dodged about through the country stealing horses and committing other depredations., He spoke of Charlie Kelly as one of the most daring horse-thieves he ever heard of. Pippinger said he concluded that he had enough burdeUs on his mind, and finally concluded to quit his companinßand settle doWn to Wotk, which he done and married in this county, where he has been living for two or three years. He was betrayed by a friened who he had confided in, to whome he had re vealed “the secret” and who happened to know the murdered man. The sher iff had with him a letter from an anon ymous Writer, informing him ns to his whereabouts. Pippinger has threaten ed his confidents life if he ever revealed it to a living being. The murderer is well known about Forsyth, where he done his trading. He killed Strange with a stick for threatening to report him to the revenue officers. tl&f chelorillg Uv'it. Mr. Editor : While sauntering across the square in a meditative mood I saw Dr. B. busily engaged in drawing wa ter. Thinking something unusual was going to happen. I accosted him and enquired of his unnatural movements. I asked if there was a conflagration gt)lrtg on in town. He calmed my fears by lnfbHiilng me that he wits “ fixen to get about supper,” and envited me to participate with him and his chum, Col. W. I accepted with pleasure, and was ushered into their batchelor den. The first thing that attracted my at tention was a curious looking little thing sitting on the table. I was a lit tle sly at first thinking perhaps that it was some newfangled explosive ma chine set to catch the unwary. I felt relieved bt) being told that it was a stove. I did not say anything but I thought the more. I thought that if that insignificant aparatus was their only reliance my chances for supper were slim. My hosts seemed to have no fears on that score, hut dedked themselves each with a large apron that reached from neck to heel, and were transformed into first-class restaurant cooks. They began to handle pots and pans in and very scientific manner and my hopes began to revive. They soon had their little oil stove in full blast, and a most delightful odor was wafted about the room, My astonishment grew as preparations for supper advan ced. The I)r., would opeii the door of the oven and examine the biscuit in a veay knowing manner, while tlid Col., was handling some eggs in a rllatinet that would make a hotel cook asham ed of himself. At last supper was an nounced and I was seated at a table covered with a snowy cloth, while each crystal glass held a napkin of immacu late Whiteness. The table was spread with an artists hand, and it fairly made my mouth water to look at the good things placed before me. My plate was helped to a large slice of deliciously broiled ham just dun to a turn, biscuit of snowy whitness and as light as a feather, eggs in different styles, homi ny with egg sauce and a variety of oth er things. The coffee was simply Su perb—the best that it has been tnyluck to taste in some time. In fact the whole repast was “just too utterly too too.” The evening was spent not only in the destruction of the viands so temptingly displayed, but in a feastof wit and a flow of soul. When I rose from the table I felt better by several pounds. If the young ladies of Jack son had their own interest at heart, they would most certainly set their caps for such men as the Dr., and Col., as either of them would make a “per fect jewel of alingband.” There arc not many girls of the present day that could prepare so good a meal. ’T>vas with regret that we bade these princes of good fellows a goodnight and retired to dream of the pleasures of “bachelor ing uv’it” Dido. A shooling affair occurred recently Dear Camden in which two men. who had a quarrel, met by accident in the road, and without saying a word, went to shooting at one another. CartWiehael informs us that he ha's ordered a cultivator, for which he dims that one hand with two mules can cultivate seventy-five acres of land, and do it in a more husbandlike man ner than is trivially done With ‘double the amoiint of hands and teams. If it proves to be a laborsaving machine we hopetd soon see them in use by CVery farmer who has suitableTatid. Few sections can lioast of as success ful a farmer a Mr. Miner Bell, of this district. He came home thorn the war owning but 50 acres of land and two old token down government horses. But he went to work and since then he has paid out between six and eight thousand dollars for land. His farm is in a high state of cultivation, and is su perintended hy himself with the assis tance of his “go ahead” boys. Perhaps one of the secrets of bis success is that he has given his whole attention to his fitrin, and has known more about his OWrt business than his neighbors.
