Notwithstanding the picnic at Snap ping Shoals, which had become gener ly known would be held on Saturday last, was postponed by the committee on account of rumors that smallpox was at Conyers and perhaps Coving ton, quite a crowd assembled at the Shoals and the progamme previously itrrar.gpt) for the day was partially car ried out. The welcome address was delivered in a faw appropriate re marks, by Master Bosworth, in a very creditablo manner for a boy of hi* age. The crowd was entertained until the hour of dinner with speeches from Col's Middlebrooks and Living ston, of Newton, and Col. Bryans, of Henry. Mayor Wright, of Jackson, having been informed that the affair had been indefinitely postponed was not prepared, aa were the other orators, and did not speak. We had the good fortune to meet with Capt. Walthall and his pleasent "little” family, of Worth vino, with whon) we enjoyed a nice dinner. Athena Banner-Watchman : Mr. Alsa Shackelford, of the Echo, was in the city yesterday, and he tells us that a negro quark, calling himself “Dr." Turner, and who has been for several years swlmlleing the negroes in lower Oglethorpe, was the other night waited upon by a delegation of hla race nd ao severely whipped that Its has since died of the injuries received. Fort Valley Mirror : A merchant in Perry has diacovered that the stalk and leaves of live “Jimpson” weed is a weevil exterminator. He had two tubs of shelled peas in his store which had a great many weevils in them. He cut the limbs off of a single weed and placed them upon the peas. In a very short time the weevils began to leave the peas, and many of them died. The remedy is believed to be a sure and permanent one, but the experiment has been tried only a short while. The Constitution, referring to the rumor that Senator Hill had already forwarded his resignation to the Gov ernor, and that Senator Browa’s would soon follow, says that the rumor is in correct. Senator Hill at one time thought of resigning, but had reconsid ered, and would not do so, and that Senator Brown had no intention of re glirninn A Macon county gentleman writes the Mvinteiuma Weekly that he has succeeded in catching several crows from his corn field in the following novel manner ;“I arrange n number of large twine strings, with a slipnooae in each, and placed them on stumps in such a manner that when pulled the stump would not interfere with the closing of the noose. I stood hidden in such convenient distance and would almost invsribly catch the crow when he alighted on the stump. I caught eleven in one mornieg in this manner. Monroe Advertiser: “A gentleman front the country, who came to town the other day, reported a novel plow ing arrangement which he saw as he passed along the road. A negro man was opening a furrow with a mule hitched to the plow- Behind him came a girl dropping the seed, The man had a kind of man hsrnese on, and he was pulling another plow, which was guided hy a woman to cover the teed. Not having but ons mule, he put that oue on double duty, by making it help to pull him, while he pulled the second plow. This was not a bad tdea from an economic point of view, thoagh it must have pul the sturdy plowman’s strength to a soverc leal. NOTICb. That applicants for licenses to teach in the public schools of Butts county, will be examined at Jackaon on Fri< lay the 26>h day of May, prepaiatory io opening the sehool on the 12th day of June, and that a higher standard of echolorsh p will be required. Resolved 2nd. That the County School Commissioner consult with the school trustees cf the respective district's, and report at the next ses sion of this body, the number and lo cality of schools in each sub-district sufficient to accommodate the chil dren of school age in the same. Resolved 3rd That teachers will be required to comply with the law, n carrying'oo their schools during a term of three months. On motion the School Commission er was authorized to renew the licen ses ot teachers of the third grade without further examination, observ ing the change required by the act of the last General Assembly. There being no further hu-iness the board adjourned to the 26th day of May. T. M. Harknkss Preat. E E.
