The giving way of an embankment
about 5 miles above town, caused the
wreck of a freight train last week. It
is said during & heavy rain, water
had pond up several feet deep, soft
cuing the dirt causing it to wash
from under the track. The engine
and several ears were completely
wrecked, and lumber scattered per
iniscuously around. The engine, it is
said stood almost straight on one end
in the washout, and several t ars were
piled upon it. All hands leaped
from the train, on seeing the danger
ahead, without any damage, except a
negro wh' it is said, was a*L*ep on a
lumber car, and had both legs and
one arm broken from which be died.

Tlie building “boom” in Jackson lias
opened up in good earnest. Messrs
Mallet Land k Cos., arc receiving car
load after car-load of lumber, shingles
Ac., which is rapidly being utilised by
our people.
Col. Van J/cKibben is having three
brick fronts run up, on the South side
of the square. He informs us that he
will fit them up in elegant style, and that
they are already rented to live, monied
men who will occupy them by the 15th
of October if not sooner, and engage in
the merchants business, ftnd the buy
in- of cotton- He also informs us that
hehasconnacted to build several dwell
ing how** for which t,ie renters are
pressi>’£ him to complete them. He
has cready built several and will con
,J!t to build more if desired.
/ Dr. J. W. Crum'is also hauling the
brick to build a drug store on the same
side of the square.
Brother Watkins, who by the way
we learn lias about sold half interest in
his livery stable, to Mr. Swint, who
has purchased property mid will move
here shortly. Mr. Swint is a large
stock dealer and the new firm, it may
be relied on, will fit up for the travel
ing public in grand style. Mr. Wat
kins is also making some additional im
provements on his store house. Broth
er is a live fellow and is doing his share
for Jackson.
Mr. Jno. Land, one of our most en
ergetic and thorough going, new men,
is erecting a beautiful and commodi
ous brick stove house on the East side
of the square, which he proposes to
have ready and stocked with goods for
the fall season. We want many more
such as he.
Mr. Wagner, and old experienced
tinner is building a shop in rear of the
Masonic hall. He has received his
tools and material and is doing busi
ness, for the present, in tlie basement
of the rock store.
Mr. 11. P. Almand, of Conyers, Ga.,
has three nice brick stores, nealy
ready for the roof. They are located
near the square, on the street leading
to the depot: They arc rented out and
onsomeofthein amonths rent has been
paid, and will be occupied ns soon as
completed, respectively, by two mer
chants, and a furniture man.
Messrs Barfield & Mann, will com
mence, in a few days, to make some
improvements on their store house by
extending it Ac.
Mr. Luther Duke, is hauling lumber
preparatory to building a store house
on iiis lot below the Post Office.
Mr. Win. Mallet-, is putting the fin

large ware house near the Mollio-ttoi
church. He lias it under roof and a
large yard already inclosed.
Mr. If. I’. Almand has a nice dwel
ling house in course of erection, on tiie
West side of town. We learn he will
build another soon.
The .1/essrs McCords have put the
torch to another large kiln of brick.
Ye editor proposes to make.some im
provements in the way of enlarging
the Nkws Office soon.
Col. E. I’. Catching*, has let the
contract, to an Atlanta firm, for the
building of a fine residence, the work
on which will shortly begin.
Freight and passenger trains are
no\• running regularly. Travel so far
has been good, and the freight trains
are loaded with merchandise, lumber,
lime and brick. We have nil express
office and Western Union Telegraph
office, in fact all the moderns con
veniences of a first-class town, except
mail facilities, hut arrange ments are
now being perfected, and in a few days
wo will have two daily mails by rail
besides two or three star routes wc al
ready have. The distances between
the post offices and the railroad are
now being surveyed, the surveyors
were here last Monday.
Jackson is the center of attraction,
as a business place, on the line of road.
Go where you will and Jackson is spo
ken of as “the place,” and why? Be
cause those who visit our town and
county realize the fact that we have a
beautiful location for a town; a fine
territory to back it; our farmers arc
thrifty and a large percent of them are
self sustaining ; our lands are as good
as can be found in the State; the cli
mate am! water is superb ; the health
ofour people is excellent. He have
good church and school facilities, our
people are kind and courteous. Upon
the whole we have not an objc, tiona
ble feature, to retard the progress of
Jackson.
Col. E. P. Catching* and G. P. Biv
ins, have formed a partnership in the
practice of law. They are both young
men ot ability and stand quite promi
nent among those In their profession.
They are attentive to business and we
are glad to know that they have been
successful, and enjoy a good practice.
We tohl you that Jackson would
probably have two or three railroads,
and now it appears that we may. We
learn the people in the neighborhood
of Barnesville and the Barnesvilie rail
road are agitating the question of ex
tending that road in tins direction and
to tan the Georgia railroad at Coving
ton, in fact it is stated that they arc
only waiting for the legislature to meet,
when application will be made for a
charter from Barnesville to Covington.
"Let ’er role.” We never knew a town
to have too many railroads. But we
think it is useless to extend the road
farther than J.ieksan, as the advantage
in through rates of freight will be se
cured at this point, from the seaboard
and the West, bv connecting with the
