J ACK TtHXEIt. Details of the Conspiracy in Which He Was King leader. Meridian, Aug. 23.—One of the most horrible and cruel conspiracies ever entered into by the negroes of this section, came to light in Choc taw county, AU., just across our Stato line, near Butler, (he county seat, on Wednesday, of last week. It seems that some white men were riding along the read leading to Allen's Mill near Dcsotoville, and found some pa pers, which, upon examination, prov ed to he the minutes of a negro or ganization, formed for brutal deeds of blood. Information was gleaned from the minutes found that it was the inten* tion ot the negroes to make a general as-anlt upon the whites between the 15th and 17th of October, ami that the organization was 490 strong ami tour years old, having been called in to existence in 1878. -Every member had subscribed to the most solemn oath and binding obligation to secro ey, and the conspirators were pledged to kill every while man, woman and child in the country, ‘ from the cradle to the grave.” A notorious bad negro by the name of Jack Turner who, in his communi cations to the organization, signed himseif ‘ Gen. ./aok Tui tier,” was the evil spirit of whom the conspiracy was born, aud who, if h;s wicked scheme broved successful, was to be made the ruler of the county with a big salary. There were also commu nications from Capt. Jesse Wilson and “Capt. Peter Hill” among the papot a. The plan was, when the lime came for action to divide the organization into three companies, to be c -mmand cd by “Gen. Jack Turner,” “Capt. Jesse Wilson” and ‘Capt. Peter Ilill,” who were to take up positions in the Butler, Mt. Sterling and Doso toville neighborhoods, and attack the whole county simultaneously, and slaughter every man, woman and child that wore a white skin. This nows was circulated rapidly over the county among the white people, who organized and armed themselves and wont in search of the black fiends who were planning lo slaughter them. They soon came upon “Unit, ,/d.ok Turner,” ‘ Captain Jesse Wilson,’’ "Capt. Peter Hill,” Secretary Fred Homier, Union, a preacher, and two other leaders, names unknown, and took thorn in custody to Haller, the county scut, where they wi re lodged in jail. Saturday morning Secretary 15 in ner was taken from the jail by the whiles and interrogated, and not with standing tho proof was conclusive against him, he denied all knowledge of the conspiracy and allirmed with Christian-liko sincerity his innocence, lie was tied up by tho toes, while liev. Litnon was brought out to toll what lie knew, He didn’t know any thing at. first, hut under the refresh ing and persuasive influence of the lash, applied vigorously to his bared back, lie remembered and told a great many things. When tho minutes were read lo him ho admitted that lie had heard them read twice before in the me t ing ; that he know tho conspiracy ex isted; that it was the intention of tho negroes to kill the people, take pos session of tho county and make Gen. Jack Turner ruler, but that lie had nothing to do with it. lie admitted that he lud been carrying the call around and getting tho negroes to join, and that when arrested he was on his last round, and that ho was paid fifty cents a day tor his services lie could not bo whipped into telling tvliero the books and other papers ol tho organisation wore kept, He de nied all knowledge of their wherea bouts; said ho knew they existed, but did not know where they were kept, lie said that one of the negroes asked in the jail tho night before if the white people had found tho books and oilier papers, and that Jack Tur ner spoke up and said : “No, they are not quite that u—d smart.' After this admission and other con clusive proofs against him, it was un aniottsly agreed among the whites that Gen. Jack Turm-r ought to swing. So accordingly he was taken from the jail, and between the hour of twelve and one o’clock in tho broad open light of the day he was hanged to the limb of a tree ou the maiu street of the town. There was a strong inti mat ation manifested on the part ol the people to hang Hie other six, but older and cooler council prevailed, and they were spared. It is said the people were as quiet and cool as people could be under the circumstances, and ihat the execution of Turner was as deliberate as if duuu under the tonus of law. All is quiet now, and no further tr-n' lc is likely to occur. I’he job priming office of Mr. Free man Smith, ot Columbus, came near being burned by the explosion of a kerosene lamp on Monday uight.
