gjje fedwoit Ifensa 'JZcKSON, GA., AUG ., 29,1882 TOWUM) county. notice! OFFICE COUNTY COURT,) Butt# County, Oa. V April 4th 1882.) On and after this date, all advertisements of ntv matters will be uone in the Jackson News STv order of the Court. By or HENRY HENDRICK. Judge C. C. B. C. ASXOIXCiniEXTS. FOR TAX RECEIVER. WE are autherized to announce the name of P Carter, for the office of Tax Receiver of Butts county. For Tax Oollecloi. We are authorized to announce the name ofG. \ BARNES for the office of Tax Collector of Butt# county, For Tax Collertor. We are authorized to announce the name of j*. LeGuin, Jr., for the office of TAX COLLEC TOR of Putts county. Mr. Alraand’s brick stores will soon be ready for the occupants. Court commences next month. How are the public roads ? We regret to learn that Mrs. Emma Bankston has been sick. The News is nearly one year old, six! has the largest circulation in the county. We are sorry to learn of the feeble ness of Mb. Jno. Higgins, who is suf fering with a cancer of the face. Some twenty buildings— stores and shops are in course of erection in Jack son. It is said Jackson will probably have one or two more newspapers. Misery loves company, come along. Maybe two will be more liberally patronized than one. Mr. Swinthas been quite sick for sev eral days, hut glad to learn that he is improving. Mr. James Marston and Ben Wal lace, of Conyers, have commenced to put the counters and shelving in Mr. Alniand's new stores. Mr. Afurphree informs us that a Mr. Adamson, of Jonesboro, contemplates putting a plaining machime in opera tion on the ground near his carriage shop. The mailing of letters at the train has reduced the Post Masters compen sation to almost nothing. Remember the Post Master gets nothing for hand ling the mail you receive. We have been absent for the past week, and ask the indulgeance of our readers for the shortness in local matter this week. Jno. IP. Gibson has withdrawn his name as a candidate for the Legisla tore at the coming election. The machine shops of the new road will be located iri Atlanta. Atlanta will donate the ground on which to build them and defray the expense of excavation, estimated cost of which is SIO,OOO. We learn an attempt was made to rob the safe in the depot at Indian Springs Monday night. The burglars damaged the safe but failed to open it. The position of the Argus in Col. Lamar’s behalf is like the Post Appeal on the Gubernatorial question—Rath or diversified. You can’t blow hot and cold at the same time. We regret to learn that Mr. M. A. Rohe rts is lying very low at the resi dence of bis son-in-law, Mr. Joe Car michael, and is not expected to live. Hinoe writing the above Mr. Roberts died Tuesday morning last He was about 75 or 75 years old and had been failing in health for some time. We are not apprised of the cause of his death. We extend our sympathies to the herioved relatives. The inter ment will take place at the old home place at Worthville to -day. Pro' 1 . J. \V. 13-ek, president ot Bow den College, has accepted, and will soon take eh <rge of the Academy at this p! ice. Heroines highly recom mended. E ghteen bales of new cotton was received iu Albany ias. Saturday- ; Black Oak, Ai.a„ August 23d, 1882. Mr. Editor: We have fine weath |er at present. Crops are tine in this section. We had an interesting Sab bath school celebration at Black Mills, in Jackson county, on the 18th insl ant. It was largely attended and the tables was bountifully spread with the good things the Mountain produces. There is a great revival going on at Bethlehem church. Among the many friends we have in Georgia on the lookout for homes, we were glad to meet Rev. E. J. Barksdale, of Henry county. He ex pressed himself much delighted with the face of our new country and we trust he will come again and purebas in our midst. There was a gentleman here a few days ago, from Michigan prospecting for 500 families. T ie boss snake was killed a few clays ago in South Alabama, by an old gen tleman 92 years old. The snake meas ured 9} feet in length, 12J inches in di ameter, and 6} inches between the eyes ; its fangs 2| inches long, and a 123 rattles. Mr. N. W. McCurdy has the finest crop of cot, on we have seen. J. H, Benton the finest watermelon, J. A. Johnson, the finest potatoes and corn. W. A. Mitchel is still prospecting for bees. Dr. Benton will pay his relatives ami friends at Jackson, a visit in Decem ber. B. J. B. Pebksvii.le Ga., August 19th 1882. Mr. Editor: A few dots from this section perhaps would not be amiss. Gnats, flies, wet weather and politics are the ortler ofthe day. Si Stallings died suddenly at his residence on the 16th instant. Sore eyes are raging anti there are some very bad cases in our neighborhood. Miss. Rose Holman, our teacher at New Hope, has about 40 cases in her school. Prohibition is raging also, and seems to be contagious. We have never seen as many young men coming to the front and advoca ting the cause ot temperance, and we hope it will carry the day in our coun ty. We have the railroad and stock law and now we need prohibition to place our county in the front rank in the State. IFe are glad to see that our esteem ed friend J. H. LeGuin lias announced himself as a candidate for Tax Collec tor. We are not far from the line 'of Bulls, but not a citizen of that county, yet if we were, the above chap would have our undivided support. He has been afflicted for years and needs the office, beside lie is competent and would make a faithful and efficient of ficer. We hope he will get the office. W. W. H. “Farmer Plowhandles” in Argus last week is perhapsoneofCol. Lamar’s pets. All we know of Col. Lamar is what the people of Butts county say about him. “Farmer Plowhandles” may’ ex patiate to his hearts content as regards the good things Col. Lamar has done for him, but it does not alter the rela tion of the Colonel with regard to complying with the lease of the States property. That’s what’s the matter, and the people of Indian Spridgs and the county’ can, and will, it necessary, speak for themselves on this question. We learn the Attorney-General has made an vestijation in coinplyence with Dr. May’s resolution and that the report is favorable to the resolu tion. We will indeavor to ascertain what the report is and give it to the readers of i he News. —♦ ♦ To (lie Voters of Bs Comity W. W. Hoard most earnestly and respectfully solicits your aid by giving him tlic office of Tax collector, he has a fami y entirely dependent upon his daily labor for a support, and had the sad misfortune to loose his right leg in the same kind ofa cause as that ot the boys that wore the gray, he was labor ing in defence of his home and dear ones, a short while since as he was ri ding to his plow his horse became frightened threw him and drug him around a while, hence the amputation ofbis leg which unfits him for manual labor. B'llie being a sober, quiet and industrious man and fully competent for the duties ofthe office of Tax Col lector. Let’s give him the office. Voters.
