Mrs. O/.burn, of Atlanta, is visiting Jackson. \Vc reeret to learn that Mrs. Henrv Land has been quite sick. We are pleased to learn that Mrs. Emma Bankston is convalessing. Jackson received 15 car loads of freight last Monday. Messrs Mallet Land & Cos,, have re ceived another lot of lumber this Week. Miss Ellen Finley has gone to Atlan ta to purchase a stock of millinery goods. We learn Mr. Barron, a yonrg man of this county, died this week of brain fever. He was sick but a short time. The friends of Mr. W. T. Heflin will be gratified to know that he has made up his mind and perfected ar rangements to remain in Jackson. One of the brick stores next to the public square is now ready for the oc cupants. The other two will be ready shortly. The building boom is still on the in crease in Jackson. Several new dwel lings have recently been commenced. The lime between Atlanta and Ma <t!jin on the Extension, has been shor tened overall hour—making it now in a little over four hours. We are proud of Mr. C. F. Waters, ns a business man and a citizen. Some body's loss is Jackson’s gain, in this thorough business gentleman. He is proprietor of the Farmer’s ware house. It is reliably said that Georgia has lost, six or eight millions of dollars, since the war, by paying certain bonds twice and through other negligence and incompetency in the past few years. Some little excitement in town last Saturday, occasioned hv both roofs of Byars and Mallets gin house taking fire, igniting from sparks from the smoke stack of the engine. Tt was soon discovered ami extinguished before any damage was sustained. Col. Wright has been appearing quite ‘snlkev” for several evenings past. He showed his “agilitv” to a crowd of young ladies going around the corner one evening, and what was so mortify ing the naughty creatures laughed at it. Mcßride k Go., Atlanta Oa. Mai. Fletcher and Bennie Watkins can “snatch -a hale of cotton blind” so tospeak:aiid ifvon !iin'fhrp theywill have it off your wagon right into the Farmer’s ware house—calculation made at the top of the market for your cotton, and the money in your hands, before you can say “scat” twice. Geo. Bivins goes around town and outs a great log “gash” in people’s cot ton hales every day. Well we guess be knows what, bo’s doing, for when the owner of the cotton comes up they have but very few words about it, end Geo. starts him ofl’in the direction of Mallet’s ware house. Merchants make out list of crockery Glass, Wood and Tin ware that you are in want of, and send it to 11s, we will attach prices, and save you ruin ous freight and breakage, that you al ways get from far off East. .Mcßride A: Cos, Atlanta Gn., aug29 Mr. John L. Moore, of Florida, and Willis Nutt, of Jackson, left for Fort Mason, Monday morning. Me learn Capt. Nutt and family, will leave for the same place, some time this fall or winter, where they will make their fu ture home. Capt. Nutt is a gentleman of first water, and the loss of so good ft citizen, and elegant family, will be regretted by the people of Butts, be cause pone knew them hut to like tl. m. We learn from our efficient depot agent, that material for the freight house at this place is costantly arriv ing, and that the workmen will com mence its erection in the course of a week. We also learn that connections will he made ami trains run through to Rome by the 10th of October. The business men of Jackson have perfected arrangements with the ferry man on the Ocmulgee river to pass the planters of Jasper county, who desire to bring their cotton to Jackson, over tlie river and return free of charge. The highest market price is being paid for cotton in Jackson. The primary election for the nomi nation of a Representative, in this county, passed of!' very quetly, last Saturday. The aspirents were Col. Barnett, Hash Flint, M. V. McKihben and Capt. Walthall. The latter was nominated by a majority of 18. Capt. Walthall is a cleaver gentleman of ability, and if elected, which we have no doubt hut that he would he, lie will make a good representative. The News office was the recipient of a box of beautiful paper flowers, this week. Paper flowers are hecomi: g quite fashionable for wear and other purposes. The donor, Mrs. Magnan, of Griffin, who is here teaching the art of making these flowers, is an accom plished hand. IFe learn several young ladies of Jackson are taking lessons un der Mrs. Magnan. She has our thanks for the nice present. Among the enterprises and struc tures in Jackson, the commodious ware house of Mr. Win. M. Mallet stands at the head of the list. It is “a number one ” building and would he a credit to any town. - Mr. Mallet evi dentiy means to embark into, ths cot ton business pcrniinently, and lie is capacitated to manage it successfully both to the interest of himself and those who deal with him. He is agent for the Witiship cotton gin and con denser. See advertisement in this is sue, and call at the Planter’s ware house and see the machine complete. This gin has an enviable reputation fur being superior to others. Gallon Mr. Mallet before purchasing elsewhere. An Atlanta merchant said to 11s: "You don’t seem to have many live merchants in your town.” “Yes,” said wo. “We have a few, whv ?” “Well, the best sign of thrifty, enter prising, wide awake business men is generally shown by liberally patroniz ing the local press, of which the News is not an index.” “Thats so was the only reply we could make. “The Editor," he continued, “may puff and blow about the enterprises and hospitality of his town and people, but if his paper does not show a liber al support from his town, it is not al ways infalible, but I can almost guess what sort of business men a town is composed of if I can see the local pa per.” To the Voters* of Units <'utility W. W. Hoard most earnestly and respectfully solicits your aid by giving him the office of Tax collector, he has afa mi y entirely dependent upon his daily labor for a support, and had the sad misfortune to loose his right leg in 1 the same kind ofa cause as that of the buys that wore the gray, he was labor ingin defence of his borne and dear ones, a short while since as he was ri ding to his plow his horse beanie frightened threw him and drug him around a while, hence the amputation of his leg which unfits him for manual labor. Billie being a sober, quiet and industrious man and fully ennipetect for the duties of the office of Tax Col lector. Let’s give him the office. Voters. Mr. F. S. Etheridge, formerly of I’cr ry, Ga., returned from New York last J/onday. lie informs us that he pur chased a magnificent lot of dry goods &c., from the immense bargain coun ters of wholesale merchants in that citv. Mr. Etheridge is evidently a thorough merchant of exquisit taste, and we venture to say he will bring as handsome assortment of elegant goods as there is to be found in any market. He is use to competition and promises to sell his goods at short profits, lie will open up his stock in a few days in one of the handsome store rooms now being finished up by Col. M. V. Me- Kibben. Be patient awhile •‘B.,”in Macon Telegraph doubtless drew heavily and strained his imagin ation, when he said “Butts would give little Alex., a handsome majority. We are not adventurers, but come to Jackson to live and wish to he iden tified with her every interest, and all our energy will be used to push her into a live progressive town. In order to do this, it is necessary to prove and show the people that they can buy tlieir goods here as cheap as any where and dispose of tlieir produce as advan tageously. We as merchants propose to do this. An experience lof 10 or 15 years in the business, qualifies and sus tains us we think, in the assertions that we are “up tc snuff” as to close points and every endeavor to buy cheap and sell accordingly shall ho made. The latter member of our firm lias just returned from New York where all goods have been bought from first hands, at the lowest possi ble cash prices, and discounting our bill the cost of transportation has more than been save I, and in propos ing to give our customers the benefit of this, our advantage is at once seen. Our stock will consist principally of dry goods, Notions, Boots, Shoes. Hots, Hardware, Tinware, Groceries Ac. IFe will buy such produce as there is a demand for. Believing it to he a mu tual advantage, we propose doing a strickly cash business. Mr. J. 11. Hardin favorably know i to the community fur several years, will be with us and solicits the patronage of his many friends. By honest straight forward dealing, politeness and cour tesy, we hope to merit a liberal pat ronage, and therefore extend an in vitation to all. Editor News: —While traveling over the country recently, in both Northern and Southern Georgia, many questions were asked about Jackson, and on being told it was on what is called a “boom,” the inquiry was fre quently made, “are not many of those moving into Jackson mere adventur ers?” My rep.ip was “No: r but fearing I might not report comic;’y, I have, since my return home, put myself to 1 be trouble to find nut n; inncli as pos sible about our new coiners. 1 find they are almost invariably good, Julia hie men—most of them are men ol means, anti those whose means arc limited have good character and got.(l credit. With such socety and a rail road with IP. T. Hefflin as our local agent [and allow me to say liere Jack son was fortunate in getting Mr. 11. His attention to business, bis accom modating disposition, bis pleasant manners have already won for him the esteem and confidence of our town.] With these our town must continue to prosper. Citizen’ of Jackson. Editor News : In tbe recent nom ination for a candidate to he voted for by the democratic party of our county, my name was voted for, against my personal wish, and consequently I made no effort to obtain the nomina tion, I only said to my friends that personally I did not desire the office but I did not think any citizen had a right to say to the people his name should not be used. My name my en orgy and my influence for the good of the people of my county belong to the people and I shall never shrink from anv duty I owe to them, they are my friends and I shall ever abide their wishes. The people have hy their choice nominated another as (heir standard bearer, it is our duly in the interest of the parly that has saved us to stand hy lhat nomination audit, is my wish that the party shall give the nominee a hearty support, which I shall assuredly do.
